GOP to hold picnic
LIBERTY -- The Trumbull County Republican Party will have its annual picnic at 3 p.m. Saturday at Creed Farm on Anderson-Morris Road in Liberty. The event is free.
Ohio Lt. Gov. Maureen O'Connor, who is running for a seat on the Ohio Supreme Court, will attend.
The party also will have a $100-a-ticket fund-raiser for O'Connor before the picnic at 1 p.m. at the farm.
Bullet fired into home
WARREN -- A 54-year-old woman told police someone fired a bullet into her home on Union Street Southwest on Thursday.
Women's Equality Day
WARREN -- The League of Women Voters, the YWCA, Harriet Taylor Upton Association and other local women's organizations will celebrate Women's Equality Day beginning at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 26 in the gazebo at Courthouse Square.
Judge Diane Grendell of the 11th District Court of Appeals will be the guest speaker. Women are asked to wear a purple ribbon in recognition of the day.
Refreshments will follow at the Upton House, 380 Mahoning Ave. N.W.
Women's Equality Day celebrates the day women received the right to vote.
Board changes meeting
BROOKFIELD -- The board of education has changed its regular August meeting to 6 p.m. Aug. 28, at the high school. A caucus will be at 5 p.m.
Board to visit schools
VIENNA -- The Mathews Board of Education meets in regular session at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the board office at 4434-B Warren-Sharon Road.
The meeting will start with an executive session to discuss employment. The open meeting begins at 6:30.
The board will conduct a walk-through of Currie Elementary School at 3306 Ridge Road, Cortland, at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 and a walk-through of Baker Elementary, 4095 Sheridan Drive, and Mathews High School, 4429 Warren-Sharon Road, both in Vienna, beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 29.
Woman dies of injuries
FARRELL, Pa. -- Lynn Hopson, 44, of Washington Street, who was injured in a one-vehicle accident in West Salem Township last week, has died in a Pittsburgh hospital.
Hopson died Tuesday in UPMC Hospital of trauma to the head, chest and extremities, an Allegheny County Coroner's Office report says. The death was ruled accidental.
Greenville-West Salem Police said Hopson, employed by UPMC Horizon at its Greenville facility, was on her way to work around 6 a.m. Aug. 6 when her car veered off Pa. Route 18, rolled over in a yard and struck a building.
Contract to build road
SHARON, Pa.-- City council awarded Horizon Construction Group of Hermitage a $382,283 contract to build a truck access road on the east side of the downtown business district.
Lawmakers approved the contract Thursday.
The plan is to build the access route by extending Dock Street from Pitt Street one block north to Dayton Way. That should get a lot of industrial trucks off Sharpsville Avenue, city officials said.
A state grant will pay for the work.
Police arrest mother
FREDONIA, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said Christine M. Sauer, 39, of Balut Road in Fairview Township forced her two children to fast for 10 days to "rid their souls of demons."
Police said that the children, 15 and 16, were allowed to eat only green beans and drink water and that the younger teen was assaulted by Sauer on Aug. 7.
Police arrested Sauer on Monday on charges of simple assault, endangering the welfare of children and harassment and stalking.
The teenagers were placed in the custody of relatives.
Girl runs into truck
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 11-year-old South Side girl was in critical condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center after she ran into a pickup truck.
Jessica Lewis of Kreiger Lane was playing tag on Windsor Avenue near Kreiger about 7:30 p.m. Thursday when she ran into the street, police reports show.
The driver, a 26-year-old Struthers man, was not cited.
