Girl runs into truck
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 11-year-old South Side girl was in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center after she ran into a pickup truck, hospital personnel said.
Jessica Lewis of Kreiger Lane was playing tag on Windsor Avenue near Kreiger about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, city police reports show. She ran into the street and into the truck's passenger side.
The driver, a 26-year-old Struthers man, was not cited.
Police said a witness stated that the truck was not moving fast or recklessly.
Arson ruled in fire
BERLIN CENTER -- The state fire marshal's office has ruled that a fire Monday that destroyed the Lake View Apartments, 17690 W. Akron-Canfield Road, was arson, said John Morris, Berlin Township fire investigator.
About 50 firefighters from 10 fire departments fought the blaze, which did an estimated $220,000 damage at the nine-unit, one-story building.
Funeral for officer
YOUNGSTOWN -- About a dozen police cars left the Youngstown Police Station this morning to attend the funeral in Akron of a Massillon police officer killed last week in the line of duty.
Patrolman Eric Taylor, 31, died after a chase and shootout with a man he had pulled over for a traffic stop in Wayne County.
Led today by two Mahoning County deputy sheriffs riding motorcycles, cruisers from Youngstown, Struthers, Campbell, Boardman, Austintown, Jackson Township, Leetonia, Goshen and Hubbard departed to participate in the 11 a.m. funeral and procession in Akron.
Burglary reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- Masked burglars held guns to two North Side women as they searched three bedrooms for money.
A 26-year-old woman told officers she was at the back of the Catalina Avenue house about 10:18 p.m. Thursday when she heard glass break in the front.
She was grabbed by one burglar as she tried to telephone police.
She said he and another man, both in their 20s, took her to an upstairs bedroom and held guns to her head as they looked through dresser drawers.
One of the burglars then kicked open the door to the bedroom of the woman's mother and the men put a gun to her, kicked her in the neck and went through her dresser.
One of the burglars fired a gun as they left.
Players clean up paint
CANFIELD -- Five Canfield High School football players will clean up paint they dumped on a township home and pay restitution, a Mahoning County sheriff's official said.
A deputy was called to the Sperone Court home about 11 p.m. Tuesday, where paint had been dumped on a mailbox and front door.
Maj. Michael Budd said the players, one 15 and the others 17, went to the home, where a Canfield High school cheerleader lives, dumping the paint because the girl, 17, had rejected one of the boys.
Budd said the boys have been placed in a juvenile diversion program until they make restitution.
Police arrest teen
AUSTINTOWN -- Police said they found several bags containing suspected cocaine early today in a car parked in the Wedgewood Plaza parking lot.
A Youngstown teen who was a passenger was charged by police with drug abuse-cocaine and violating curfew.
Two other people in the car were not charged.
Police said they found the car parked in a remote section of the lot about 1:30 a.m.
The report notes that police have recorded several drug violations in the parking lot and nearby area.
Little Miss CityFest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications for the Little Miss CityFest contest must be returned to the Federal Plaza office by Monday.
The city will have its annual summer festival downtown from noon until 11 p.m. from Aug. 23-25 on Federal Plaza.
The contest, scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at the CityFest on Federal Plaza downtown, is for girls ages 8-11 who live in Mahoning County.
The contest will be a Hula-Hoop competition and a quiz on city of Youngstown trivia.
Applications can be picked up at the mayor's office.
