Marshall Street Bridge closes while workers do inspection

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Marshall Street Bridge, between Oak Hill Avenue and Front Street, was closed Wednesday.
This closure is necessary to allow bridge engineers from MS Consultants to conduct a detailed inspection and analysis of components of the bridge, said Carmen S. Conglose Jr., deputy director of public works. Pending the outcome of this inspection, the bridge may reopen to traffic, or temporary repairs may be made, he said. The bridge is likely to be closed for at least a week for the engineering study, Conglose added.
A detour route will be posted directing all motorists to use the Spring Common Bridge via Oak Hill Avenue, Front Street and Federal Street.
The bridge was closed because of "nontypical vibration"' at the west end of the bridge as traffic passed over it Tuesday, Conglose said. Street department workers noticed and reported the unusual vibration, he said. Bids are to be accepted next year for replacement of the 70-year-old bridge, a project that is estimated to cost $2.9 million.
