Blewitt namedby conference
BAY CITY, Mich. -- Adriane Blewitt, a graduate of Boardman High and a senior on the Ashland University women's track and field team, has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A three-time NCAA Division II national champion in the shot put, Blewitt has a 3.54 grade-point average with a double major in physical education and health.
A Boardman High graduate, Blewitt was a first-team Verizon Academic All-America selection this past season, and was named the Ashland Female Student-Athlete of the Year for 2001-02.
She recently won a bronze medal in the shot put in her first competition as a member of the USA track team. Her throw was 53 feet, 3.50 inches in the North America, Central America, Caribbean Championships.
Big weekendat Quaker City
SALEM -- The Hot Rod Magazine Power Festival, featuring the NMCA/NSCA Super Series will be held at Quaker City Raceway Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
A test-n-tune session will be open to the public Friday from 5:30-11 p.m. The NMCA/NCSA Super Series qualifying round and the Hooters Jet Car versus the Cargo Mate Jet Car in at least two match races Saturday from 8 a.m. until midnight.
NMCA/NSCA Super Series elimination rounds and Jet Car match races are slated Sunday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
With a weekend purse of over $60,000 and a contingency purse of nearly $170,000 up for grabs some of the country's biggest names will be drag racing including Pat Musi, 19-year-old Justin Kalwei, Marc Cantoni, Lawrence Conley, Dale Pittman, Darrell Thomas, Johnny Kelly and Jim "Mac" MacKenzie.
W & amp;J tabbedto win PAC
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & amp; Jefferson College is favored to capture its 17th Presidents' Athletic Conference football championship in the past 18 years according to the PAC football preseason coaches poll.
W & amp;J, 11-1 last season, garnered three of the six first-place votes to finish with 33 points. Bethany College and Westminster College tied for second with 23.
Morrow selectedplayer of year
COLUMBUS -- Tim Morrow of Boardman was declared the Player of the Year in the boys 13-15-year-old division for the Ohio Golf Course Owners Association 2002 tournament series.
Kay Lanesto host 'battle'
GIRARD -- The first "Battle of Girard" bowling tournament will be held Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. at Kay Lanes.
The event is open to employees of companies in the area. The cost for a five-person team is $60. Scores will be determined by a three-game total. The winning business will receive a "bragging right" plaque.
Proceeds benefit the Girard High School bowling team program.
SOI Classicat Olde Dutch Mill

Upsets abound
SCARBOROUGH, N.Y. -- Upsets dominated the opening round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championships.
Meredith Duncan, the 22-year-old defending champion who had an asthma attack in the final round of qualifying Tuesday, was eliminated by Katherine Hull on the second extra hole of a playoff at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
Hull then was defeated by 16-year-old Aree Wongluekiet, who then beat Leigh Anne Hardin., another ex-U.S. junior champion.

* MONTREAL -- Jennifer Capriati defeated qualifier Sarah Taylor 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the Rogers AT & amp;T Cup.
* INDIANAPOLIS -- Top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt advanced to the RCA Championships third round. Hewitt outlasted Alberto Martin 6-3, 7-5.
* WASHINGTON -- Andy Roddick overpowered Justin Gimelstob 6-2, 6-2 to reach the Legg Mason Tennis Classic third round.
