A Scrapper skid-snapper

NILES -- Good things happen in baseball when a team has solid at-bats and executes offensively. The Mahoning Valley Scrappers realized this after Wednesday's 9-8 win over the Jamestown Jammers.
The Scrappers were on the brink of losing a season-high fourth straight game, but got back into contention for the Pinckney Division crown and the New York-Penn League wild card berth.
Bill Peavey went 2-for-4 for the Scrappers with a single, a home run and a walk.
"I got a pitch up and I just took a good swing at it," said Peavey. "That's the main thing -- to get a good pitch and put a good swing on it and good things can happen."
Winning inning
More good things happened for the Scrappers Wednesday night. With the score tied at 8 and runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Shaun Larkin and Eider Torres worked the count full in each of their at-bats. Larkin singled to move Jeff Haase to third and Torres' groundball scored Haase with the winning run.
"It was a long game and they never quit," said Scrappers manager Chris Bando. "Shaun Larkin had a great at bat and Jeff Haase and Eider Torres had tremendous at bats to push across a run for us."
Pitching woes
The one dark side was that Mahoning Valley's recent pitching struggles continued. The bullpen lost a three-run lead in the sixth after Michael Rogers left the game. In the past three games the staff has yielded 28 runs.
"The last three nights our pitching, our bullpen has struggled," said Bando. "We need to do a little better job out of the bullpen.
"But our offense has been fine."
Rogers started for Mahoning Valley and pitched into the sixth inning, allowing three runs, all earned, striking out three, and picking a runner off first.
Jamestown's pitching staff blew a three-run lead in the fourth and a two-run lead in the seventh. Dustin Kupper, the Jammers' starter, lasted only 31/3 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits.
Peavey's solo shot was the start of a six-run fourth inning for the Scrappers. Mike Conroy doubled in two runs during the rally and finished the night 3-for-5.
"It feels really good to contribute for the team," said Peavey. "We needed this win and we needed to comeback and to really show people what we're made of."
