CLEVELAND -- Today's sentencing of J.J. Cafaro on a felony conviction of providing an illegal gratuity to former U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., has been postponed.
No new date has been scheduled.
Cafaro's attorney and federal prosecutors sought the delay from U.S. District Court Judge Solomon Oliver Jr.
Traficant is serving an eight-year federal prison sentence for racketeering, tax evasion and bribery.
Guilty in DUI case
WARREN -- Edgar Fisher Jr., a member of the city's civil service commission, was sentenced this morning to three days in jail and fined $250 after pleading no contest and being found guilty of driving under the influence and driving left of center.
Fisher, 58, of Lynwood Northeast, told municipal Judge Terry Ivanchak he was "tremendously sorry" and apologized to the city and his family.
According to police reports, Fisher was driving on Tod Avenue Northwest around 12:28 a.m. Aug. 8 when he went left of center and struck another vehicle.
Reports state Fisher was taken to a local hospital by ambulance after he fell asleep during a breath test for alcohol.
Seeking levy renewal
HOWLAND -- The Howland Board of Education will be asking voters in November to renew a five-year, 3.4-mill levy that raises $2 million a year for district operating expenses.
The levy was first passed in 1978. The board approved putting it on the ballot at a special meeting Tuesday.
Patrol identifies body
LIBERTY -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol has identified the person who was found dead after a high-speed chase with Youngstown police.
Scorpio A. Jones, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene where troopers found him near a vehicle he was believed to be driving.
The vehicle was found in a wooded area off St. Andrews Drive around 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Ward meeting planned
WARREN -- Councilman Robert Holmes III, D-4th, will conduct a ward meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hippodrome, High Street Northeast.
Tim Yova from Sunshine Homes is expected to attend to answer questions about a $2.6 million home improvement project in parts of the 4th and 2nd wards.
The proposed Safe Streets committee and its purpose also is expected to be a discussion topic.
Liberty celebration
LIBERTY -- Liberty Township Community Celebration will be from 7-9:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at the high school football field.
The evening will include games, food and introduction of the high school fall sports teams, cheerleaders and marching band.
A 9:30 p.m. fireworks display by Zambelli Inc. of New Castle will highlight the event.
The celebration is sponsored by township trustees, school board and Liberty Township Park Improvement Committee.
Civil service exams
GIRARD -- Civil service commission will conduct entrance-level examinations for the positions of police officer and firefighter.
The eligibility lists have expired and those on the new list are eligible for two years.
Applications can be obtained at the mayor's office in city hall from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Aug. 30.
There is a $25 application fee.
Grand jury to hear case
NILES -- The case of a West Park Avenue man accused of selling drugs from his home business has been bound over to the Trumbull County grand jury.
The decision was made at a preliminary hearing Monday for 28-year-old Clifton Smith, who was arrested last month after a four-month investigation.
Smith is accused of selling marijuana to investigators from the Niles Narcotics Unit and the Trumbull County Drug Task Force from his home business, PC Computers Plus, 409 W. Park Ave.
The investigation involved one purchase of drugs, valued at a few hundred dollars, police said.
