Former worker arrested
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested a former employee of the Sheetz Inc. store at East State Street and Oakland Avenue on a charge of theft. Amy L. Hagan, 24, of Fleming Way, surrendered to police at 9:20 a.m. Monday after learning a warrant had been issued for her arrest.
Police said she is accused of taking a total of $1,700 from the cash register at the store between June 28 and Aug. 7. She was arraigned and freed on her own recognizance pending a preliminary hearing.
Property appraisals
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners hired an appraiser to look at three properties for the Milton Street Extension project. County officials want to extend Milton Street to allow better access to the county government center. There are now two privately owned structures on the property at 465 and 469 E. Washington St. Dan McCowan and Co. Inc. of Pittsburgh will be paid $1,100 for the appraisal work. Commissioners said they hope to negotiate the sale of the property with the owner after the appraisals are done.
Women attack man
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a van full of women attacked an East Budd Street man because of an ongoing custody dispute he has with one of the women. The man, who is in his 20s, was not seriously hurt, police said. Two women were arrested, and police are searching for the others. They think five or six women were involved. Lachuanta Cozart, 24, of Hermitage and Angelica McMillan, 22, of Farrell were charged with burglary, simple assault, criminal mischief and criminal conspiracy and have preliminary hearings pending.
Police said the women went to the East Budd Street home Sunday evening, kicked in the door, beat up the man and threw a potted plant through his window. They then took the child and left, police said.
Counterfeit bills
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Counterfeit money was passed at two Neshannock Township businesses. Police said someone used a fake $10 bill to buy $1 worth of gasoline and a pack of cigarettes at 2:57 a.m. Tuesday at the BP Oil on Wilmington Road. Two more fake $10 bills showed up at J & amp;M Mini Mart on Mercer Road at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police said a tall, thin man wearing a jersey-type shirt bought a pack of gum and then requested change for two $10 bills. He left in a white car.
Postponement grantedin Cafaro sentencing
CLEVELAND -- The sentencing of businessman J.J. Cafaro on a felony conviction of providing an illegal gratuity to former U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., which was set for today, has been postponed. There is no new sentencing date scheduled.
Cafaro's attorney and federal prosecutors had sought the delay from U.S. District Court Judge Solomon Oliver Jr. Traficant is serving an eight-year federal prison sentence for racketeering, tax evasion and bribery.
Break-ins in Salem
SALEM -- Police are probing two break-ins that occurred earlier this week.
Reilly Elementary, 491 Ohio Ave., was broken into about 11:30 p.m. Monday. Classrooms were ransacked, ice cream bars eaten, and several items were taken, including a videocassette recorder, a cassette recorder and a large plastic traffic light.
Thieves broke a window to enter Phone Booth Youth, a youth organization at 251 S. Lundy Ave., sometime late Monday or early Tuesday. An unspecified amount of cash was taken, police said.
Trial continued
STRUTHERS -- The trial of Ray Guzman, 29, of Creed Street, which was slated for Monday, was continued until Sept. 16.
Guzman is charged with theft after several homeowners accused him of taking deposits for new floor coverings and not installing them. Victims from Struthers and Poland Township have filed reports against Guzman and Guzman's Floors, 2791 E. Midlothian Blvd.
