Strickland to visit
NORTH LIMA -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland is slated to appear at the Beaver Township Crime Watch meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road at Western Reserve Road.
Strickland, a Lucasville Democrat, is seeking re-election in the redrawn 6th District against Republican opponent Michael Halleck of Salem.
He will discuss health-care reform, Medicare, prescription drug costs and crime statistics and answer questions.
Thieves steal cash
SALEM -- Thieves entered an office of V's Roadhouse, a restaurant at 2488 E. State St., and stole a lock box containing an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
The theft was reported about 8:13 a.m. Monday. There was no sign of forced entry into the business.
Theft at car wash
SALEM -- Nearly $500 in cash was stolen from a coin-operated car wash on the 1500 block of South Lincoln Avenue, police said.
Thieves damaged a door providing access to the money-changing machine, a police report stated.
The theft was reported about 9:27 a.m. Monday.
Panel picks Mangino
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County District Attorney Matthew Mangino has been appointed to the executive committee of the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Institute.
He was nominated for a one-year term during the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Association annual meeting in Hershey, Pa.
The institute, composed of nine district attorneys from across the state, is the education arm of the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Association. It oversees all continuing legal education program and other education outreach of behalf of Pennsylvania district attorneys.
Racing at the regatta
PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Sailboat racing and canoeing are just a few of the sports featured at the fourth annual Regatta at Lake Arthur Aug. 24 and 25 at Moraine State Park. Sailboat racing starts at 10 a.m. each day and is open to all sailors.
Three canoe races will be sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania PaddleSport Association. There are racing classes for all ages. Registration starts at 7 a.m. Aug. 24 on the east side of Lakeview Swim Beach area on the North Shore. There will also be recreational canoe and kayak rides for those attending.

Water closes office
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- State Sen. Gerald LaValle of Rochester, D-47th, is telling constituents to contact his office in New Castle if they need assistance. It is located at 301 Central Building, 101 S. Mercer St.
LaValle's Rochester office is closed due to water damage.

Garbage truck hits cars
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A city garbage truck hit two parked vehicles. Police said the truck was backing up on National Street at 4:15 a.m. Monday when it hit a car owned by Victor Mills and a vehicle owned by Ron Hiler. Both men live on National Street.
Police said Hiler was leaving for work and saw the crash. City workers took the license plate of the Mills car and then left the crash, police said. City workers later told police that they were unaware they had also hit Hiler's vehicle, authorities said.
Sewer project meeting
POLAND -- The Mahoning County Sanitary Engineer will have a public meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Poland Township Government Center, 3339 Dobbins Road, to discuss the proposed sewer project planned for U.S. Route 224, Lutheran Lane, James Street and Poland Center Drive.
Representatives from the Mahoning County Health Department also will be available to answer questions.
DJ walking to New York
YOUNGSTOWN -- An area disc jockey is planning a walk to New York City, arriving Sept. 11. He'll donate money collected along the way to the fire department in that city.
Jim Loboy of Hot 101.1 FM will leave Aug. 28 on the 444-mile walk. He hopes to raise $50,000.
