YOUNGSTOWN -- City police are investigating the death of a North Side man who was struck on southbound Interstate 680 as he rode a bicycle. Jeffrey V. Urbanek, 37, of Illinois Avenue road his bike the wrong way onto the South Avenue exit ramp at about 3:22 p.m. Monday, said Lt. Mark Milstead. The bicyclist crossed two lanes of traffic before being struck by a Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by a 21-year-old Youngstown man. Milstead said it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the interstate.
Moore murder trial
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jury selection began Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for the murder trial of Lorice Moore. The 25-year-old McGuffey Road man is charged in the March murder of Stephen Shackleford, 29, in the Victory Annex housing complex. Eddie Bryant, 25, of Cohasset Drive, was also charged with murder, but a jury found him innocent last month. Two other men, Armin Moore, 24, and Calvin Moore, 30, are also charged with murder and awaiting trial.
Drive-thru holdup
YOUNGSTOWN -- An armed robber who walked through the drive-thru lane at the McDonald's on Fifth Avenue took an unspecified amount of money, police said. A 19-year-old worker said the robber ordered a burger at about 2:30 p.m. Monday and slipped her a note, ordering her to give him money or he'd shoot, city police reports show. The robber then brandished a handgun, demanding the money. The woman gave him money from a cash drawer and he fled.
Mom gets 60 days
YOUNGSTOWN -- A woman whose children were found playing on the street last year will serve 60 days in Mahoning County jail. Neda Brimhall, 22, formerly of North Raccoon Road, Austintown, pleaded no contest Monday in Mahoning County Juvenile Court to three counts of child endangerment. Judge Theresa Dellick sentenced Brimhall to serve 60 days of three 180-day consecutive sentences, court officials said. Brimhall will be placed on one year's probation after her release. If she violates probation she could serve the remaining jail terms. Investigators said Brimhall's 1-year-old son was playing unsupervised on North Raccoon Road on Sept. 9. They also found her 2-year-old daughter unattended on the road Oct. 11. Both children were said to be playing unsupervised on the road Nov. 25.
Man to be arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- A West Side man who was taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center after being hit in the head with a television awaits arrest on traffic violations when he is released. City police said they interviewed David R. Hagens, 34, of Millet Avenue at the hospital. He said he was home at about 7 a.m. Monday, arguing with a 35-year-old housemate who wanted him to leave. Hagens said he was getting his television when he was hit, fell to the floor and was kicked, punched and hit about the head with the TV. Hagens has four outstanding orders for his arrest for failing to appear in court on traffic charges.
2 charged with assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two South Side people have been charged with assaulting police officers. At 2 a.m. today, police were called to an East Lucius Avenue home where a woman said her daughter, Kimberly Thomas, 19, was trying to fight her, police reports show. When police escorted her outside, she became aggressive and spit in an officer's face, they said. Thomas also faces disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges. A 12-year-old Neosho Road boy was arrested at about 7:20 p.m. Monday after police were called to a Kiwatha Road home where a 10-year-old girl said the boy had threatened her with a butcher knife. When city police and a county deputy sheriff arrived, the boy, holding a knife, swung a fist at one officer. He was sprayed by another officer with pepper spray and arrested. He also faces an aggravated menacing charge.
'Jailbirds' raise funds
YOUNGSTOWN -- Warrants have been issued by the Eastern Ohio Muscular Dystrophy Association to round up local business people accused of having big hearts. The more than 100 "jailbirds" will be brought to the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor to "do time" while they raise $2,500 in bail money to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
