YOUNGSTOWN -- The Community Center for the Deaf is offering American Sign Language classes beginning next month.
Different courses are available for beginning, intermediate and experienced signers. Minimum cost is $50, but an $85 payment includes an optional workbook.
The beginner classes will help pupils learn vocabulary, language structure and deaf culture.
Registration deadline is Aug. 31.
There is one section for children, but ages 12 and older are eligible for adult classes.
The center is a nonprofit United Way agency.

Man charged in assaults
BOARDMAN -- A 64-year-old man accused of assaulting two women in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn on Friday night has been arrested. Robert Michael Clansly was charged by police with assault, drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia. Reports state that Clansly was carrying a .38-special revolver when he was arrested. Police also confiscated a suspected marijuana cigarette, rolling papers, a bottle of Cognac and prescription bottles without labels that contained different pills. Reports do not include descriptions of the assaults.
Man reports shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- A New York man reported to city police that he was shot in the leg by a drive-by shooter as he visited his mother on the South Side. The man, 22, said he was standing in the East Florida Avenue driveway assembling a grill around 12:20 p.m. Sunday when he was fired upon by an occupant of a car that drove by. He suffered an injury to his left thigh and was treated at Beeghly Medical Center.
9-year-old charged
BOARDMAN -- A 9-year-old boy was arrested and charged with domestic violence early Saturday after a Meadowbrook Avenue woman called police and said she was assaulted. The woman said she had been assaulted just after 12 a.m. in a Chevy Tracker by a family member.
Reports do not include a description of the assault or describe the relationship between the boy and the woman, 19.
Police also were called to the Meadowbrook Avenue residence around 3:40 p.m. Saturday after the boy's 30-year-old mother discovered him trying to commit suicide on the roof of the home. The boy had minor cuts on his left forearm and was crying when police arrived.
