YOUNGSTOWN -- A 46-year-old East Side man told city police a jealous lover stabbed his upper stomach with scissors as he lay in his bed. The man said the 36-year-old woman, whom he described as a "sex partner" but not his girlfriend, became angry around 7:40 a.m. today after finding out he had another female at his McBride Street house Sunday. He said he fought her off by batting her about the face and she fled. The man was treated by Rural Metro ambulance personnel and said he would follow up treatment with a doctor later today.
Hagan seeks debate with governor
YOUNGSTOWN -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tim Hagan wants to debate Gov. Bob Taft in each candidate's hometown -- Youngstown and Cincinnati.
Hagan, a Youngstown native, made the statement Sunday during a campaign stop in the city.
Nothing is scheduled in the city, his campaign said.
Hagan has accepted eight invitations to debates organized by press and community organizations around the state, the campaign said. Taft has yet to accept any debate invitations.
Woman beaten, raped
YOUNGSTOWN -- A woman with facial injuries so severe that her eyes were swollen shut called city police to her home to report that she had been beaten and raped by an acquaintance.
The 40-year-old South Side woman reported the assaults around 7:40 p.m. Saturday, police reports show. She said she and a 30- to 40-year-old man she knows only by a first name went to a bar Friday night and he returned home with her to drink beer. She said the man, who dates her friend, slept on the couch.
Around 1 p.m. Saturday, they were sitting in the living room and he requested sex and she said no, asking him to leave, she told police. He then beat and raped her, she said. The woman was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Man and his son assaulted, threatened
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police say a 71-year-old man and his 27-year-old son were assaulted with a brick and the son was threatened with a gun over a stolen stereo.
The younger man said he and his father had returned to their Wick Avenue home after fishing around 5:30 p.m. Sunday when a 21-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman pulled up and accused him of stealing the stereo, police reports show. The man is the brother of the son's fiance & eacute;.
The 21-year-old man struck the son on the head and face, then hit him in the head with half a brick, the son told police.
The father said the woman swung a sledgehammer at him and threw a brick into his leg. She also pointed a gun at the son, threatening to shoot him and threw fishing gear onto the street, the son said.
Shot fired at man
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 29-year-old Brookfield man dating a 16-year-old North Side girl said he was fired upon at her Benita Avenue home because of the relationship, city police reports show. He told officers a 20-year-old man and 26-year-old woman drove down the intersecting Kensington Avenue around 11 p.m. Sunday when the woman pointed a handgun at him and threatened to kill him, the girlfriend and others at the home. The man pointed a rifle, threatening to kill the 29-year-old.
The 29-year-old said the other man disapproves of the relationship but the girl's mother approves.
