Man dies in accident
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A Mercer man died when his SUV ran off Old Mercer Road and rolled over. Pennsylvania State Police said Jason P. McConnell, 18, of North Spring Road, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:38 p.m. Sunday by Scott A. Black, Mercer County deputy coroner.
A passenger in McConnell's vehicle, Ronald A. Bice, 18, of Old Mercer Road, escaped injury. Both men were wearing seat belts, police said.
McConnell was northbound on Old Mercer Road around 12:35 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve and his SUV slid off the road, police said. The vehicle struck an embankment and went airborne, coming back down onto the road on its right side. It then rolled over, coming to rest on its roof, police said.
Illegal sale of Viagra
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- A Butler County woman has pleaded guilty to illegally selling 9,000 samples of the prescription drug Viagra.
Cathleen A. Zilner, 30, of North McKean Street, was a pharmaceutical representative when she sold the samples in August 1999, said Mary Beth Buchanan, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Zilner pleaded guilty Friday before United States District Judge William L. Standish to one count of violating federal drug laws.
William C. Snyder, assistant U.S. attorney, said Zilner sold the samples to unauthorized people who then smuggled them out of the United States for sale in countries where the drug isn't legal.
Federal law stipulates that drug samples may be distributed only to licensed physicians, health-care professionals, pharmacies or hospitals. The samples must also be free, given only to promote the sale of the drug, Snyder said.
Zilner will be sentenced Nov. 18. She could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. She remains free on bond pending sentencing.
Theft of watches
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Three large containers with about 400 Citizen and Seiko watches were taken from a car on East Laurel Avenue. Police said someone broke into the car between 10 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday by pushing open the front passenger side vent window. Two checkbooks, a car radio and compact-disc player are also missing.
Seeking levies' renewal
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township trustees voted unanimously to ask the Mahoning County auditor to certify their request for two renewal levies to be placed on the November ballot. At a previous meeting, trustees voted to place the levies on the ballot but needed a formal vote to obtain the auditor's certificate. Once it is received, the clerk will send the request for the renewals -- a 2-mill general operating levy and a 2-mill fire and emergency services levy -- to the board of elections.
Praise for poll workers
COLUMBIANA -- John Payne, director of the Columbiana County Board of Elections, lauded the efforts of poll workers and his staff after last week's special election in Columbiana Schools.
Polls in the school district closed at 7:30 p.m. Poll workers delivered the paper ballots to the board of elections office in Lisbon and Payne's staff processed the 904 ballots, added totals from the two Mahoning County precincts in the school district, and reported the final tally by 8:15 p.m.
ATVs reported stolen
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Three all-terrain vehicles were taken from a trailer parked on South Crawford Avenue. City police said they were taken overnight from Friday to Saturday. One vehicle was found behind a home on Richlieu Avenue with the starter ripped out, they said. Another vehicle was found later in the woods off Walnut Street. Its starter was also removed, they said. Police are still searching for the third ATV, a Polaris Sportsman. Authorities said a fourth ATV was left on the trailer but also had its starter removed.
