Pal Joey's splitstwo in tournament
STRUTHERS -- Pal Joey's of the Youngstown Class AA Baseball League split two games in the NABF Tournament at Cene Park Saturday.
Frank Santore threw a three-hitter over seven innings as Pal Joey's blanked the Westminster Falcons 13-0.
The Purdue Chicks pushed across four runs in the top of the ninth for a 10-6 lead then hung on to down Pal Joey's 10-9.
Jim Putko, Brian Frasco, Mark Thomas and Joe Bettura each had two hits to support Santore, who struck out 13.
Santore had three hits and Ryan Johnson drove in two runs in the setback to Purdue.

Moya beats Hewitt
MASON -- Carlos Moya didn't surprise many people when he beat Lleyton Hewitt twice this year on clay.
The Spaniard's victory over the No. 1 player in the world on a hard court, however, showed how far Moya has come back after beating Hewitt 7-5, 7-6 (5) in the final of the $2.95 million Cincinnati Masters Series.

Rubin upsetsDavenport
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- Chanda Rubin upset No. 3 Lindsay Davenport 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to win the JPMorgan Chase Open on in a final between two players making comebacks from knee surgery.
Davenport served for the match in the second set after trailing 3-0, but Rubin broke back and went on to win.
Johnnies face tax liens, city debts
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Some city officials believe the cash-strapped Johnstown Johnnies may soon be only a memory, but the owner insists he won't take part in any effort to move the team out of the former steel town.
The Frontier League team recently pulled the plug on radio broadcasts of its games, has been hit with more than $125,000 in federal and state tax liens and -- for the sixth straight year -- has fallen behind in payments owed to the city.
City records indicate the Johnnies and owner Tom Sullivan owe $16,719.94 to the city for rent at Point Stadium, utilities, and overtime for city Public Works employees on the grounds crew and police who provide game security. Sullivan's last payment to the city was for $7,200 on April 22.
Ozzie honored
ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals unvieled a statue of Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith in front of Busch Stadium. His pose: stretched horizontal to the ground, trying to grab a groundball in the hole.
Smith's statue is the 11th outside the stadium to commemorate Cardinals who are in the Hall of Fame.

Memorial heldfor 1972 victims
MUNICH, Germany -- Relatives and athletes joined in a memorial service for the 11 Israelis killed at the 1972 Munich Olympics, standing in a moment of silence, listening to songs and speeches and promising not to forget the victims.
The one-hour ceremony took place at the monument to the victims, a large stone tablet placed at the bridge linking the former Olympic village to the Olympic stadium.
Cuba wins baseball championship
MESSINA, Sicily -- Oreluis Avila pitched a seven-hitter, and Dani Miranda homered as Cuba beat the United States 6-0 Sunday to win the World University Baseball Championship.
Cuba went 7-0 at the tournament, finishing with four straight shutouts.
Miranda homered in the second off Kyle Sleeth, and Cuba made it 3-0 in the second when Mario Vega hit an RBI single to center and Sam Fuld's throw to third was wild, going past third baseman Aaron Hill for a run-scoring error.
Rolexis Molina hit an RBI single in the fifth that scored Mario Denis, who reached on a leadoff error by Hill.
Sleeth allowed four runs -- two earned -- and six hits in five innings.
Japan beat Taiwan 5-0 to win the bronze medal.
