PETE MOLLICA | Golf Mill Creek eyes its first Championships

Mill Creek Golf Course has been enjoying an outstanding season, and will cap off the year with its first Mill Creek Championships in October.
New golf director Dennis Miller and head golf professional Andy Santor have helped bring the area's only 36-hole layout back up with the elite courses in the area.
Already this season, the course has had four successful events beginning with the first annual stroke play tournament in May, followed by the Pace-Tuttle Best Ball tournament in June and the Pro-Am Scramble event in July.
The annual 7-Up Junior two-day tournament also was a huge success.
The season-ending Mill Creek Championships are being held Oct. 5-6, a two-day, 36-hole event that is open to the public.
Big weekend event
Santor announced this week that the entry fee for the two-day event will be $75, and that will include two days of golf, prizes and a cookout on both days. Riding carts are available for an additional charge.
"We want to make this event available to anybody, and that's why we are having all kinds of different divisions," Santor said.
There will be a women's division, along with a women's senior division, while for the men there will be a regular open division, a seniors (ages 50-64) and a super seniors (ages 65 and over).
"We really want to do this up right, and we are possibly even looking to having a clambake after the second round of the tournament," Santor said.
Both Santor and Miller want to make it clear that the event is open to any golfers in the area.
Father Haidet event
The 18th annual Father Haidet Golf Tournament, sponsored by the St. Charles Men's Club in Boardman, will be Aug. 25 at Pine Lakes Golf Course.
This tournament held in remembrance of Father Frank Haidet, who served as pastor at St. Charles from 1977 to 1985, is the annual fund raiser for the Men's Club each year.
The tournament began in 1985, shortly after the death of Father Haidet, who was instrumental in helping to start the men's club which was also formed in 1985.
The tournament began with three or four foursomes at the beginning, and has grown to more than 90 golfers last year.
At Pine Lakes
This year's tournament will be held at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard. The cost of the event is $60 which includes 18 holes of golf, riding cart, lunch at the turn and dinner in the Pine Lakes Pavilion.
Proceeds from this tournament will benefit the Men Club's newly established Ken Wilson Memorial Scholarship Fund and other parish projects.
