REPORTS
Caesarean birth rate
COLUMBUS -- Though the overall number of Caesarean section births is on the rise in Ohio, the number of primary (first-time) C-sections here is below the national ceiling for C-sections, and vaginal-birth-after-Caesarean rates have declined over the last few years, according to the Ohio Department of Health. In 2001, Ohio's overall C-section rate was 22.2 percent of births, compared with the 2000 national rate of 22.9 percent. Ohio's primary C-section rate was 14.1 percent in 2000, below the national goal of no more than a 15-percent primary rate by 2010.
Drop in organ donors
CLEVELAND -- LifeBanc, the federally designated organ procurement organization for northeast Ohio, reported a decline in the number of organ donors through June 30 of this year compared with the same period in 2001 (34 donors compared with 46), and urged people to talk with their families about donating organs. A single donor can potentially provide organs and tissue to help 50 people, and about 500,000 people each year receive sight or mobility through tissue transplantation, said Debbie May-Johnson, LifeBanc's executive director. Nationally, organ donation has declined by more than 21 percent from the previous year. On average, 17 people die every day because of the shortage of organ donors. There are more than 80,000 on the national organ transplant waiting list, May-Johnson said.
