MERCER, Pa. -- Contracts have been awarded for modernization work on the Valley View Homes apartment complex on South Otter Street. The 31-unit complex is owned by the Mercer County Housing Authority. L. DeWitt Boosel, executive director, said the modernization work will be limited to the exterior of the complex buildings. Hudson Construction Inc. of Hermitage was named general contractor at a cost of $896,000, while Penn-Ohio Electrical Co. of Brookfield will do the electrical work for $167,000, he said. The job will begin this week.
Duquesne Universityexpects large class
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Duquesne University will see a 22-percent increase in its freshman class this year, the largest single-year jump in school history, school officials said.
With a few weeks left in the summer break, the school anticipates a class of 1,467, compared with 1,200 last year.
Regional applications dipped 25 percent in the past five years. Duquesne made a concerted marketing effort to recruit local freshman for 2002.
This year's class has 1,115 in-state students compared with 931 last year.
The average grade point average of students this year is expected to be 3.6 compared with 3.4 last year, he said.
