Youngstown teamdrops opener
ABBEVILLE, La. -- The Waterford, Conn., baseball team pushed across a run in the last of the eighth inning Saturday to beat the Youngstown All-Stars 2-1 in the opening game of the Babe Ruth 13-year olds World Series.
Matt Katich went 3-for-4 while Frank LaRubbio and Tony Brunetti each finished 2-for-4 for Youngstown.
Cory Collins pitched the first seven innings and yielded three hits with six strikeouts.
Today at 11 a.m., Youngstown (0-1) plays a representative of the Southeast Regional.

Kickboxing cardset for Aug. 24
MEDINA -- Orrville native Ryan Madigan and Euclid product Dan Rawlings are billed in professional bouts to headline a 10-fight kickboxing card Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at Pinnacle Sports Complex, 313 Medina Road, in Granger Township.
Madigan, nicknamed "The Lion," will be matched against Bill Bierce of Rochester, N.Y., for the International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) East Coast super middleweight (165-172 pounds) Muay Thai title.
Rawlings, an IKBO U.S. champion, will be paired against Keith "The Hammer" Nesbitt, who also hails from Rochester, N.Y., in a lightweight (128-132 pounds) Muay Thai bout.

Trumbull Club forming
WARREN -- The Trumbull County All-Athletics Sports Club is being organized to honor athletes, coaches and patrons of Trumbull County, provide a common meeting ground for sports enthusiasts and to establish a Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame.
The club will hold meetings featuring guest speakers on the fourth Monday of each month, starting on Aug. 26 at the Ground Round Restaurant on Elm Road.
There will be a cocktail hour (cash bar) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and dinner and a speaker from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The club will represent all sports from the area. Dues are $20 annually or $100 lifetime.

Baker's lineupcard stolen
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Pittsburgh Pirates' lineup card from the game in which Barry Bonds hit his 600th homer was stolen from Giants manager Dusty Baker's office on Friday night, Baker said.
Baker planned to present the card and his own lineup card to Bonds, but when Baker got to work on Saturday, the Pirates' card was missing from the folder in which he had stored it.
"I hate a thief," Baker said. "There are too many keys around here. I shouldn't have to lock up everything in my office."
Baker said other lineup cards have disappeared from his office at Pacific Bell Park in the past.

Holtz hasoutpatient surgery
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina football coach Lou Holtz underwent surgery to clear a blocked tear duct.
After attending an early morning practice Friday, Holtz traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., for the outpatient surgery.
Holtz missed the afternoon practice, leaving offensive coordinator Skip Holtz and defensive coordinator Charlie Strong in charge. Holtz was back in his office by Friday evening.
It is the second time in the past month Holtz underwent the procedure. The clogged tear duct has been irritating Holtz's eye, but he has not had any vision problems, athletics spokesman Kerry Tharp said.
Arkansas ADrecovering
ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles was recovering Saturday from surgery to remove a cancerous prostate gland.
Broyles, 77, was doing well following Friday's surgery at the Mayo Clinic, said Arkansas sports information director Kevin Trainor.
After the operation, doctors told Broyles' family that all of the cancer had been removed, and that it hadn't spread beyond the prostate.
Broyles, who made his diagnosis public in June, said he was fortunate to have some of the best doctors available -- those who discovered the cancer in Arkansas, and at the Mayo Clinic.
Portcullis winsCanadian Stakes
TORONTO -- Portcullis took the lead late in the stretch to win Saturday's Breeders' Stakes thoroughbred race, the final event in the Canadian Triple Crown.
Portcullis overtook leader El Soprano to take first among the 10-horse field at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack. The victory was worth $300,000 for owner Sam-Son Farms, of Milton, Ontario.
Portcullis captured the 1 1/2-mile event on a firm turf in 2 minutes, 29.8 seconds. El Soprano came in second, with Mountain Beacon taking third.
Portcullis becomes the third different winner in the Triple Crown series. T.J.'s Lucky Moon won the Queen's Plate race and Le Cinquieme Essai won the Prince of Wales, but neither horse was entered in Saturday's race.
Deadline looms
NEW YORK -- Baseball's labor negotiators made little headway at a rare weekend bargaining session, leaving players on course to set a strike deadline when their executive board meets Monday in Chicago.
The sides met twice Saturday for about 90 minutes but spent much of the day in caucuses. They planned to meet again today, but there didn't appear to be much likelihood they would reach an agreement before the union meeting.
