Panezich tosses his best in javelin
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Nick Panezich, a sophomore at Springfield High School and member of the school's track and field team, competed this week at the AAU track and field meet at the University of Tennessee.
Panezich won a gold medal in the discus on Wednesday with a mark of 157 feet, 1 inch in the intermediate boys division for ages 15-16.
On Thursday, Panezich won a silver medal in the shot put with a throw of 50-10.
Panezich placed 14th in the javelin event on Friday with a mark of 131-7, a personal best.
NABF actionset at Cene
STRUTHERS -- Rick Gozur had a double and scored a run for Jolly Joe's in a 7-5 loss to Zanesville Rooners in a National Amateur Baseball Federation game Friday at Cene Park.
Andy Capraruolo and Ross Buttle each singled and scored for Jolly Joe's in a 5-2 loss to the Nature Stone Bulls.
Rob Tamburro had two hits and scored two runs for Pal Joey's in an 8-6 loss to the Akron Storm.
Tournament play continues today at noon.
Thiel hires Roseto
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Sarah Roseto was named head volleyball and softball coach at Thiel College. She replaces JoAnn Gordon, who resigned in July.
Roseto, who was a graduate assistant at Edinboro, was a four-year starter on the softball team and a two-year starter on the volleyball team at Edinboro University before moving to a graduate assistant position at the school.
Zanic takes overGeneva team
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Geneva sports information director Van Zanic was named interim head softball coach. He has been an assistant softball coach three of the past four years.
Zanic, a 1992 Geneva graduate, was a four-year member of the Geneva baseball team. He replaces Peggy Ross, who went 51-36 before resigning after last season.
Ursuline's Granthonored at camp
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. -- Tyra Grant, entering ninth grade at Ursuline High School, attended the 5-Star women's basketball camp at Robert Morris University, where she received four awards.
Grant was awarded trophies for MVP NCAA all-star game, playoff MVP NCAA Division, league champs and NCAA Division most outstanding player.
Grant is the niece of Wanda Grant, former basketball player at Youngstown State from 1978-81.

Hewitt beats Agassi
MASON -- Lleyton Hewitt outlasted Andre Agassi 7-5, 6-3 Friday night in a battle of baseline bombers to advance to the semifinals of the $2.95 million Cincinnati Masters Series.
Hewitt, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, and Agassi, a former No. 1, provided some brilliant and some spotty tennis in the match that lasted 1 hour, 41 minutes.
Agassi committed 30 unforced errors and failed to hold serve five times; Hewitt committed 29 unforced errors and failed to hold twice, both times in the first set.
Hewitt will play the winner of Friday night's match between 12th-seeded Andy Roddick and Fernando Gonzalez in one of today's semifinals.
Earlier Friday, eighth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Wayne Arthurs 6-4, 7-6 (2), and No. 16 Carlos Moya beat Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (3), 6-1 to set up the other semifinal.

Keith Jacksonheaded into Hall
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Keith Jackson never played for a passing team at Oklahoma.
Jackson used his 6-foot-2, 250-pound frame and big-play ability to make himself a can't-miss target, becoming a two-time All-American and three-time All-Big Eight selection. He helped the Sooners win the national championship in 1985.
His love for college football never waned, and one of his biggest honors comes today when he is enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame along with 24 others, including his former coach, Barry Switzer.
Others entering the Hall of Fame this year are former Brigham Young quarterback Steve Young, Michigan receiver Anthony Carter, and Michigan State safety Brad Van Pelt.
Williams, Capriatiousted in Calif.
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- Chanda Rubin upset top-seeded Serena Williams 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in Friday's quarterfinals of the JPChase Morgan Open, ending the French Open and Wimbledon champion's 21-match winning streak.
No. 2 Jennifer Capriati exited within an hour of Williams, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Japan's Ai Sugiyama.
