BOARDMAN -- The Holiday Inn here, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Holiday Inn Hotels, is donating 50 room nights to a charitable organization associated with the Youngstown-Mahoning Valley United Way.
The winner will be chosen on the basis of submitted descriptions of how the rooms would be used to benefit the organization and/or its clients. The essay must be between 100 and 400 words and arrive at the United Way Office, 255 Watt St., by 5 p.m. Friday. The winner will be announced at the 2003 United Way campaign kickoff event Aug. 27.
The winning organization can use 50 rooms for a single night, one room a night for 50 nights, or anything in between, said Brent Reynolds, the hotel's general manager.
More than $35,000raised for food bank
YOUNGSTOWN -- More than $35,000 was raised during the Second Harvest Food Bank's 11th annual "Taste of the Valley" event.
The money will allow the food bank to distribute 350,000 pounds of food to its 200 member agencies, food bank officials said.
Buena Vista, 1305 Buena Vista Ave., Warren, won in the "Best Overall" competition. Teddy's at Holiday Inn MetroPlex, 1620 Motor Inn Drive, Liberty, took the title for "Best Appetizer."
Timberlanes at 544 E. Pershing St., in Salem, and Buena Vista tied for "Best Entree," and Vernon's Cafe at 720 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles, won for "Best Dessert."
