Jim Traficant Night: The Scrappers organization is touting Wednesday's home game against the Jamestown Jammers as "Jim Traficant Night." A Jim Traficant look-a-like will be present to welcome fans, who will receive a Jim Traficant face card, and participate in activities. The night will include a mock election that allows fans ages 18 and older to select the representative of their choice for the 17th Congressional District. Sons of a truck drivers (like Traficant) and individuals wearing toupees will be admitted free. The promotion follows the former congressman's recent sentencing to federal prison for charges including racketeering, bribery, obstruction of justice and tax evasion. Scrappers general manager Andy Milovich looks at Wednesday as a night of fun. Traficant "played a vital role in attracting the franchise to the Mahoning Valley, and we felt that a Jim Traficant Night at Cafaro Field would show our gratitude for his efforts," Milovich said in a press release. "The past year has been very difficult for a lot of people in the community and it is our goal to have some light-hearted fun and show our appreciation for all that he has accomplished."
Special guest: Tonight is Bernie Kosar Bobblehead Night, and Kosar, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback from Boardman, is expected to attend. The event was rescheduled from July 23 when Kosar's plane was delayed because of thunderstorms. Kosar will throw out the first pitch and be available to sign autographs for a limited time during the game. Individuals holding ticket stubs from July 23 will be granted a free ticket of equal or lesser value by presenting the ticket stub at the Cafaro Field Box Office.
Friendly confines: The Scrappers returned home Thursday to begin an eight-game homestand, which matches their longest of the season. After playing two more games against Tri-City, Mahoning Valley will face Auburn in a two-game series and Jamestown in a three-game set. "It's great to be back," said Scrappers manager Chris Bando, following the team's five-game stand in Jamestown. "It seems like we haven't played any games here [at Cafaro Field] this year. So it's good to have a stretch here where we're going to be home."
Roster addition: Marshall McDougall has been assigned to Mahoning Valley from Double-A Akron to rehabilitate a strained hamstring. He is expected to be at Mahoning Valley for eight days. McDougall, an infielder, was acquired by the Cleveland Indians from the Oakland Athletics in a trade involving former Tribe pitcher Ricardo Rincon. McDougall gained national attention by hitting six home runs in a game while playing for Florida State. He was selected in the ninth round of the 2000 draft.
Pitching match-up: Mahoning Valley will send Michael Rogers (4-3, 3.53 ERA) to the mound tonight against Tri-City's Mark McLemore (1-2, 7.80).
