AUSTINTOWN -- Township trustees have scheduled a special meeting for 6 tonight to vote on a plan to build condominiums and duplexes near North Turner Road. The meeting will be in the township hall on Ohltown Road.
The plan calls for Mark IV Builders Inc. of Hubbard to build 39 units in a 15-acre planned unit development west of North Turner Road and north of Lake Drive. The zoning commission has recommended approval.
About 50 residents attended a hearing in July to express concerns about the plan. The residents are worried that the development will increase traffic in the area and have a negative effect on the natural setting.
Car reported missing
AUSTINTOWN -- A Compass West man told police Tuesday that someone took his car without permission while he was in jail.
Gregorio Beltran, 29, was arrested by police and charged with felonious assault Friday night. He is accused of slashing Joetta Stoddard, 48, of Nadyne Drive, Youngstown, who was treated by paramedics for a cut on her finger.
Beltran told police that he discovered his car was missing when he posted $12,000 bond and was released from jail Monday. He identified to police the person he believes took the car.
Beltran heard the felonious-assault charge Monday in Mahoning County Court here. No plea was accepted. His next hearing is set for today.
Trespassing sentence
STRUTHERS -- Four of five people charged with criminal trespassing at Hamilton Lake were sentenced in municipal court Wednesday; a bench warrant was issued for the fifth.
Judge James R. Lanzo fined Kourtney E. Harris, 20, and Angela J. Kaminsky, 19, both of Youngstown, and Michelle R. Common, 21, and Andres T. Dimacale, 21, both of Salem, $150 each plus court costs and sentenced them all to 30 days in jail, which was suspended, and one year of reporting probation.
Last month all four pleaded no contest to the trespassing charges after they were caught fishing at Hamilton Lake hours after the pay-to-fish lake had closed. The judge found them guilty.
James R. Lawson, 21, of Logan Avenue, Youngstown, also pleaded no contest to the trespassing charges last month but failed to appear for sentencing.
Cats thrown at drivers
BOARDMAN -- Township police are looking for a man accused of hurling live cats at other motorists from the window of his red pickup truck while driving up Market Street just before noon Wednesday.
Dave Nelson, Animal Charity humane officer, recovered three of the animals, which had been hit by cars and killed.
Sentenced for assault
STRUTHERS -- Judge James R. Lanzo of municipal court sentenced Frank S. Coscarelli, 45, of Lee Avenue, Youngstown, to 180 days in jail -- 150 days suspended with credit for 30 days served -- and fined him $10 plus court costs after finding him guilty of assaulting a clerk at the Goodwill Store, 466 Youngstown-Poland Road.
Coscarelli was charged with assault, menacing and disorderly conduct after he shouted profanities and lunged over a counter to strike a clerk after being asked to leave the store June 10.
Judge Lanzo dismissed the disorderly conduct and menacing charges.
Crews hit gas line
AUSTINTOWN -- Wendy's restaurant on Interstate Boulevard near state Route 46 was evacuated for about an hour Wednesday morning because of a gas leak. Construction crews struck a gas line while working in front of the restaurant about 10:20 a.m. The gas was shut off by 11:50 a.m.
Threats investigated
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that an 11-year-old Notre Dame Avenue boy was threatened with a pocketknife Wednesday afternoon by a 13-year-old neighbor.
Police reports say the boy was riding his bike near the baseball fields on Vassar Avenue about 4:45 p.m. when he was approached by the 13-year-old. The boy has had disagreements with the 13-year-old's brother, who is 12.
Reports say the 13-year-old pulled out a knife and said that the 11-year-old would get cut if there was a fight.
