Jolly Joe'srouts Brooklyn
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Jolly Joe's of the Youngstown Class AA League played Chicago this morning in the All-American Amateur Baseball Association Tournament after beating Brooklyn, 11-1, in eight innings on Wednesday.
Aaron Walker went the distance with a 12-strikeout performance for Jolly Joe's in the event for players 19-and-over. Walker allowed just five hits and walked three, but Jolly Joe's scored once in the first inning and twice in the fourth before Brooklyn scored. Jolly Joe's went ahead, 6-1 in the bottom of sixth and 7-1 in the seventh.
Derek Stanfield had two singles and a home run for four RBIs while Rick Gozur had two singles. Caleb Goist and Andy Capraroulo tripled.
On Monday, Gus Hlebovy pitched a four-hit shutout as Jolly Joe's defeated Town Team 12-0. Hlebovy struck out seven, walked two, and did not allow a runner to advance past second base.
Boardman's Curryto Ohio Dominican
BOARDMAN -- Sean Curry, a recent graduate of Boardman High, will continue his baseball career at Ohio Dominican University.
Curry batted .505 this past season and earned first team All-Steel Valley Conference honors and honorable mention All-Ohio. He was second team All-SVC as a junior. He had a 3.4 grade point average and was in National Honor Society.
Warren JFK star earns scholarship
WARREN -- Colin Clemente, a junior at Warren JFK, placed first in the long drive contest and earned a $500 scholarship for winning the Kenny Novak Memorial Golf Championship last week at Walden Country Club. Clemente, age 17, was the overall winner in both age divisions: 16-17 and 18-19.
Football kickoff
NILES -- A Mahoning Valley high school football kickoff with former NFL stars will be held August 10 at 7 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Church, 2055 Pleasant Valley Road. The former NFL stars will speak on taking it to the next level. For more, call 539-6582.

Coyote Uglies wins
FRANKLIN, Pa. -- The Coyote Uglies, a girls fastpitch team, recently won the Wice-Hart Memorial Softball Tournament.
The Uglies, a group of 15-to-18-year olds playing in the 21-and-under age bracket, went 5-1 while outscoring opponents, 38-11.
Ashley Miller threw a perfect game in an 11-0 win in the semifinals, then tossed a four-hitter in an 11-2 win in the finals.
Eight of the Uglies' 11 players are or were with the Ohio Top Guns fastpitch organization. Jamie Maraczi and Rachel Smith are from Bristolville and Andover, respectively.
Heidelberg Collegegets new coach
TIFFIN -- Duane Sheldon, a Strongsville High School graduate, was named Heidelberg College's men's basketball coach Wednesday.
Sheldon joins Heidelberg after spending the last three years as an assistant at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Grove City volleyball garners honor
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's volleyball team was recognized for academic achievement during the 2001-02 school year by the American Volleyball Coaches Asociation and Molten U.S.A., Inc.
The Lady Wolverines compiled a 3.50 grade-point average, the second highest among Pennsylvania colleges and universities behind Duquesne (3.58). It ranks the seventh among all Division III volleyball teams in the nation and 21st in the NCAA.
Westminster swim team earns honors
NEW WILMINGTON -- The Westminster College women's swimming team earned Academic All-American honors for the 2002 spring semester from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
The Lady Titans achieved a 3.467 grade-point average, the second highest in the nation among Division II programs behind Truman State University (3.59).
Geneva picked 4thin conference poll
BEAVER FALLS, pa. -- The Geneva College football team has been selected to finish fourth in the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League, in the MSFA pre-season coaches poll.
The Golden Tornadoes, who open the season Sept. 5 at home to California (Pa.), garnered 65 points.
