Wreck kills 15-year-old; 3 others injured
DAMASCUS -- A West Branch High School student was killed and three others were taken to Salem Community Hospital after a one-vehicle crash in Goshen Township on Tuesday. Goshen Township Police Chief Jim Willock said Collin D. Smith, 15, of 15399 U.S. Route 62 Salem, was killed. Willock said Smith did not have a driving permit.
His three passengers -- Matthew Campbell, 18, of Fairview Drive, Beloit; Nathan Greenawalt, 17, of 4th Street, Damascus; and Robert Stull, 17, of Main Street, Beloit -- were treated at the hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said this morning.
Willock said the crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. east of Damascus on private property at Smith's home. He said the boys were riding in a 1996 open-top Jeep owned by Smith's father when it overturned, ejecting all four.
Willock said Collin Smith was driving the Jeep down a long driveway, and the vehicle went off the edge of the driveway.
He said Goshen Township police Sgt. Steve McDaniel continues to investigate the crash.
He said that although the Ohio State Highway Patrol does not handle crashes on private property, Canfield post troopers are assisting McDaniel in the investigation.
