AREA SANDLOTS Babe Ruth 13-year-olds reach World Series



The Youngstown team will play in Louisiana beginning Friday.
MENOMINEE, Wisc. -- Nick Turco and Corry Collins combined on a four-hitter as the Youngstown Babe Ruth baseball all-star team (age 13s) defeated Owensboro, Ky., 6-3 in the regional championship Monday.
Youngstown, which led 3-0 after two innings and 5-2 after three, will now play in the World Series in Louisiana, beginning Friday.
Tony Brunetti, Jesse Moses, Turco, Mike Olenych, Frank Rosile and Matt Weir each had a hit for the winners.
Junior League baseball (ages 13-14)
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Canfield baseball team was eliminated by Kansas in regional pool play 23-14 Monday.
Canfield, Kansas and Missouri were all 2-1 in pool play, but the other two teams advanced due to the tiebreaker rule.
Joe Rosko had three hits, including a double; Tom Ivany had two hits with a double; while C.J. Morris, John Thomas, Joe Fox and Paul Ruchtie each had two hits for Canfield.
Representing Ohio in the 12-team format, Canfield rallied from a 10-7 deficit Sunday to pin a 13-12 defeat on Missouri in divisional pool play.
After opening the tournament Saturday with a 10-0 victory over Indiana, Canfield jumped out to a 7-2 lead against Missouri then surrendered eight runs in the third inning.
Trailing 10-9 in the sixth inning, Canfield scored four runs. Two came in on a wild pitch, while Andrew Turocy had an RBI single.
John Pitzulo picked up the win, allowing two runs in the final 4 2/3 innings.
Thomas led Canfield's offense with four hits. Ruchtie knocked in two runs with a single.
Junior Division softball (13-14)
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Junior Division all-star softball team will play Kentucky in the Central Region semifinals today at Firestone Park in Akron.
Boardman advanced into the 5:30 p.m. semifinal after victories over Indiana 2-1 and Illinois 8-0.
Against Indiana, Kari Thompson hit a game-winning single to center field. Boardman trailed until the sixth inning when Nicole Williams doubled to score Tricia Bailey. Danielle Burin led Boardman with two hits, while Williams got the pitching victory.
Against Illinois, Bailey pitched a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. DiAndra DiBacco went 3-for-3, with a double and three runs scored. Burin, Mara Palombaro and Katie Zetts each added two hits.
