FOR PARENTS
Establish rules with your children regarding whose homes they can visit when you're not there and where they can and can't go in the neighborhood.
Tell children in whose car they may ride. Teach them to never approach any vehicle, occupied or not, unless accompanied by a parent or trusted adult.
Teach children to get out of dangerous and uncomfortable situations quickly. Practice role-playing and basic safety skills.
Listen to your children, and keep lines of communication open.
Make sure children know their name, address and telephone numbers and how to use the telephone.
Choose baby sitters with care, obtaining references from family, friends and neighbors.
FOR CHILDREN
Always check with your parent or person in charge before going anywhere or doing anything.
Always take a friend with you when you go to play somewhere.
Don't be tricked by adults who offer you treats or gifts or ask for your help.
Don't be afraid to say no and get away from any situation that makes you feel uncomfortable or confused; trust your feelings.
Don't get into a car or go near a car with someone in it unless you are with a parent or trusted adult. Never take a ride with someone without first checking with your parent.
Never go into a public restroom alone.
Never go alone to the movies, mall, video arcade or park.
Keep doors locked when you are home alone. Don't open the door for anyone or talk to anyone who is not a relative or trusted family friend.
