YOUNGSTOWN -- YSU's baseball game against Akron on Monday was canceled due to bad weather. The Penguins (12-19) will play host to Kent State at 7 p.m. today at Cafaro Field.
Youth camp has vacancies
YOUNGSTOWN -- Space is still available in the federally-funded National Youth Sports Program day camp, which will be June 11 through July 19 at Youngstown State University, according to Marcia Matanin, professor of physical education at YSU and program administrator.
The sports and educational enrichment program, which is free to Youngstown-area youth ages 10 through 16, serves 300 participants each summer, Matanin said.
Applicants should contact the Youngstown Area Community Action Council, (330) 747-7921.
Participants, who are primarily from low-income households, receive a free medical exam, free daily hot breakfast and lunch, free transportation, math and science assistance and alcohol and drug abuse prevention education. The program is in its eighth year here.

Harding's Massuccishares MVP honors
POLAND -- Warren Harding High's Rob Massucci finished second in the 100-meter run in last weekend's Poland Invitational with a time of 11.02 seconds.
A computer scoring error originally had Massucci in third. The change allowed him to share MVP honors in the running events with teammate Tjawonkher Davis, who won the event in 11.0.
Correction
Ernie Ruby, who will be inducted into the Greater Youngstown Baseball Oldtimers Association, is a 1952 Hubbard High graduate. In Sunday's edition, the information supplied by the Oldtimers incorrectly identified him as a '54 graduate. The banquet is Sunday at St. Michael's Hall in Campbell.
Hubbard's Chaneyfirst in discus
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College freshman Jim Chaney of Hubbard took first place in the men's discus with a mark of 145 feet in the recent Slippery Rock University Invitational. He also finished fourth in the shot put (48-2 1/2).
'Pappy' passes away
SAN FRANCISCO -- Former Youngstown East High basketball standout Charles "Pappy" Joachim died on March 17 in San Francisco after a 10-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. A Mount Union graduate, he coached basketball at Mineral Ridge and Rayen before moving to San Francisco. He is a member of the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame, Ohio High School Coaches Hall of Fame and the East High Hall of Fame. He was 81.
Coach wins 400th
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Bethany College softball coach Jan Forsty won her 400th game Friday, a 1-0 victory over Waynesburg.
Her career record is now 403-233-3, including a 323-178-3 record over 15 years at Bethany.
Thistledown offer
NORTH RANDALL -- Beginning Sunday, Thistledown will offer a free live Thistledown Program with the $1 admission. The program consists of live Thistledown races and races from Beulah Park or River Downs.

ALLIANCE -- Mount Union will play host to Ohio Athletic Conference Championships in women's tennis from Thursday through Saturday and golf on Thursday and Friday at Pleasant View Golf Club.
Senior Olympic sign-up
YOUNGSTOWN --Registration forms are available for the 2002 Bank One Senior Olympics of Northeast Ohio. Events include bowling, horseshoes, track and field, golf, bocce, tennis and billiards. Events will be held from May 29 through June 15 at athletic venues around the valley and are open to anyone age 50 and over.

Dunn hired at Thiel
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- George J. Dunn, 1998 Thiel graduate, was hired as head coach of the Tomcat wrestling team. He replaces Jerry Tennant, who resigned March 20. Dunn will also coach the women's tennis team.
