VIENNA -- Amber R. McGinnis, 15, of Austintown, was to be Pilot for a Day and an honorary Air Force Reserve second lieutenant today at the 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station.
The program offers a tour and orientation to children who live with a chronic or life-threatening disease or illness. She will receive an aircrew flight suit and other mementos as well being taxied aboard a C-130 Hercules aircraft. Amber is receiving treatments at Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital in Youngstown for osteosarcoma, a leg tumor.
Car vandal in Poland
POLAND -- A vandal scrawled the word die into the paint on the trunk of a Water Street woman's car, slashed her seats and a front tire, and scratched the paint in several places, police reports say.
The 22-year-old woman told police she found a man she knows from Newton Falls slashing the seats of her 2000 Pontiac around 9:30 p.m. April 22. When she approached him, the report states, the man told the woman she was going to die.
The man fled on foot through the back yard with the woman's fianc & eacute; chasing him. Police reports say he got away in a blue Pontiac Grand Prix reportedly driven by a Boardman man.
Other damage to the victim's car includes several large scratches on the doors, hood and front bumper.
Equipment stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- A $32,000 skid-loader was reported stolen Monday from a construction site on Mahoning Avenue. The equipment was last seen Saturday.
Police also received a report Monday that two handguns, several coins and a pocket watch had been stolen from a state Route 46 home. An entrance door to the home had been forced open during the weekend.
In addition, a manager at Giant Eagle on Mahoning Avenue told police Monday that a man flim-flammed a cashier out of $410 Sunday afternoon. The man asked the cashier to change several large bills until he had taken the money without her knowledge.
Austintown man robed
AUSTINTOWN -- A Cumberland Drive man told police he was robbed of $100 and his bank book early today while he was sitting in his car in his garage. The victim, 78, said a man approached him and took the money and bank book about 12:45 a.m. without using a weapon or force. The robber then ran to a car and drove away.
