INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State failed to score a run Sunday and dropped both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 2-0 to Butler.
The Penguins (12-19, 6-6 Horizon League) managed just six hits in 14 innings against Butler (25-17, 7-8).
The Penguins are scheduled to play host to Akron at Cafaro Field at 7 p.m. YSU plays host to Kent State Tuesday at 7 p.m. and travels to Ohio State Wednesday before a weekend series at Wright State.
Softball
DETROIT -- Youngstown State was handed 7-0 and 7-2 setbacks Sunday by Detroit, extending its losing streak to 11 games.
Char Kudlock, Amber Smith, Lacey Reichert and Stephanie Hartman had hits for the Penguins in the first game. Katie Marsh (1-8) took the loss.
Stephanie Hartman (6-17) pitched a complete game for YSU (10-30, 1-13 Horizon League) in the nightcap and she and Amanda Berry each had two hits. Allison Pfaff hit a solo home run.
Track and field
BEREA -- Jen Moore placed second in a school record time of 2 minutes, 14.5 seconds in the 800-meter run Saturday at the Baldwin-Wallace College Invitational.
The old mark of 2:14.98, set in 1993, was held by Becky Rudzik.
Lindsay Frontz placed fourth (2:15.5) and Rachel Albert was 11th (2:20.8) in the 800.
Leslie Johnson, Jeanna Cunningham, Aaliyab Gillespie and Janae Stephens took first place in the 4x100 relay (48.64).
Cunningham finished fifth in the 100 (12.3) and Gillespie placed 12th (12.8). Stephens was third in the 400 (57.6) and Leslie Johnson sixth (58.7).
Kelly Leonard was third in the 100 hurdles (14.4) and she was sixth in 400 hurdles (65.5). Gillespie was fourth in the 100 hurdles (14.4).
Andrea Bardy placed ninth in the 3000 steeplechase (11:50.8) and Lindsay Wojciak was 10th (11:54.10).
Lori Griffen was third in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches). In the shot put, Delores Gaines placed eighth (41-3/4), while Beth Hochstetler was 18th (39-1/2).
Tim Tatarka was third in the 1500 (3:58.5) and he was sixth in the 800 (1:55.9) and Dan Cuesta was 21st (1:58.5). Jarrod Davis placed 21st in the shot (43-1/4).
Kurt Michaelis finished seventh in the mile (4:03.37) in the men's Olympic Development heat at the Penn Relays Saturday.
Michaelis missed the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:03.
Tennis
INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State lost to Wright State 4-1 in the third-place match at the Horizon League women's tournament Sunday.
YSU's Leslie Banks and Annie Marino defeated Kara Dunbar and Glorida Montero 8-2, and Jenn Meister and Heather Hagood beat Marie Craig and Kyana Jackson 9-8 (7-5) to earn the doubles point.
The YSU men lost in the first round, 4-1 to Illinois-Chicago. R.J. Pepino defeated Wade Clark 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
LOCAL
Two Titans inducted
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College had a pair of representatives among the 12 inductees Sunday in the Lawrence County Historical Society Sports Hall of Fame.
Coach Gene Nicholson and Pam Beatty, a two-sport standout, were honored.
Nicholson spent 31 years as a member of the football staff (1969-99), including the last eight as head coach. He also served as head coach for swimming, track and field, men's tennis and wrestling. He remains head men's golf coach and assistant track and field coach.
Beatty, a Mohawk graduate, was a standout in basketball and softball. She remains the Titans' career leader in assists (550 from 1987-91) and single season leader in assists (176 in 1990-91).
A four-time all-district performer, she also served two years as team captain. In softball, she still holds the school record for runs scored in a season (47 in 1990) and was team captain as a senior.
She is a computer teacher and softball coach at Mohawk High.
