STRUTHERS -- The board of education awarded more than $4 million in contracts for additions and renovations to Struthers Middle School during a special meeting over the weekend.
General construction went to Murphy Construction, at $2,277,400. Murphy submitted the lowest among six bids. Fortney Weyn submitted the highest, $2,648,800; and DJ Porter Construction submitted the second-lowest, $2,298,000.
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning contracts went to Roth Brothers at $1,174,000. The bid was $2,000 lower than the second-lowest and $324,649 lower than the highest. Seven HVAC contractors submitted bids.
The plumbing contract went to Komar Plumbing, at $152,000. Komar's bid was more than $13,000 less than the second-lowest bid and $67,600 less than the highest; five contractors submitted bids.
The contract for fire protection systems went to Grunau Co., a $209,000 contract. Grunau's bid was $6,800 lower than the second-lowest bid and $35,180 lower than the highest. Four fire protection contractors submitted bids.
Valley Electric was awarded the electrical contract at $897,000, the lowest among three bids submitted. Santon Electric's bid was the highest, $1.09 million; Enertech was second, $982,566.
Contracts for the middle school project total $4,709,400, some $864,639 under the $5,574,039 budgeted.
Contract for furnishings
During Saturday's meeting, the board also awarded a contract to Kreidler Construction to provide loose furnishings district-wide. Two vendors submitted bids: Kreidler bid $156,476; Furniture Focus bid $164,662.85.
Most of the loose furnishings will be purchased through state contract.
In other business, the board adopted an agreement with Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 261, which represents classified workers -- custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria and clerical personnel. The new three-year agreement becomes effective July 1.
