Report: Hospital seeksto restart program
CLEVELAND -- University Hospitals wants to restart its heart transplant program this week after suspending it because of a string of patient deaths, The Plain Dealer reported Sunday.
The hospital halted its transplant program Feb. 8 when a 51-year-old Painesville Township heart transplant patient died, the fourth patient death in the transplant program in 13 months. The hospital performed 13 heart transplants last year. When the program begins again, the hospital will more rigorously screen patients with pulmonary vascular disease, which brings the highest risk in heart transplantation, said Dr. Robert Stewart, who heads the program.
