9 to be arraigned
YOUNGSTOWN -- One woman and eight men arrested in three drug raids over the weekend were expected to be arraigned today in municipal court.
Members of the police department's vice squad made four arrests Friday at 834 N. Garland Ave. on the East Side and two arrests at 555 Carroll St. and three arrests at 343 W. Warren Ave., both on the South Side. Police confiscated crack cocaine and marijuana at the Garland Avenue home; crack and a handgun at the Carroll Street home; and crack, marijuana and a handgun at the West Warren Avenue house.
Parole worker arrested
AUSTINTOWN -- An armed employee of the Ohio Adult Parole Board was arrested early Sunday after he was found passed out in a car on Westmont Drive. Reports do not give his age and address. Police were called to the dead-end of Westmont Drive about 3:59 a.m. to investigate a suspicious vehicle.
When they arrived, they found a sport utility vehicle had struck a guardrail. The man was in the driver's seat passed out on the steering wheel, police said. He awoke and told police that he did not know where he was or how he crashed his vehicle. Police said the man smelled of alcohol and refused a sobriety test. He was charged with driving under the influence.
Police said they searched his car and found a loaded handgun in a holster in the glove box. The gun, which was the man's duty weapon, was taken by police for safekeeping.
Italian Heritage grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Italian Heritage Foundation will award grants of $562 to four programs this year.
They are: ITAM Auxiliary Post No. 2, which will use the funds to help stock a food cupboard at the V.A. Outpatient Clinic; the Ursuline Sisters Summer Magic Program, which will provide a summer day-camp program for minority girls from the inner city; the SMARTS Center, a partnership among Youngstown State University, area schools and arts organizations, which provides meaningful experiences to children who participate in Students Motivated by the Arts programs; and Golden String Inc., which will provide a four-week summer camp for children with special needs.
Award recipients were selected based on the merits of their programs, said Flora DiRenzo Schneider, foundation president.
"Our main goal is to give back to the community. We don't just do it Italian to Italian," Schneider said.
Funds are provided by interest earned on the Italian Heritage Foundation Trust Account.
Spring cleanup details
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- BFI Waste System Inc. will be conducting a spring cleanup in New Middletown Village on May 8-9. This cleanup will be for all residents who are BFI customers.
BFI will accept all items except: whole tires, refrigeration units, free flowing liquids, automotive parts, broken concrete, dirt, tree limbs more than 36 inches long or more than 7 inches in diameter.
Any single item in excess of 70 pounds will not be accepted. Carpeting must be tied and bundled in lengths not to exceed 4 feet. If you have questions, call (330) 542-2846.
Money seminar
GIRARD -- Parishioners and guests of St. Rose Parish are invited to attend a free money management seminar on the topics of debt management and asset management at 7 p.m. May 9 in the St. Rose Rectory Hall.
Discussion on debt management will instruct on how to consolidate or reduce your debt and lower your total monthly outlay, and asset management will address learning how to supplement your retirement plan and learning how to prepare for your child's future.

St. Rose kindergarten
GIRARD -- Kindergarten screening for St. Rose School, 61 E. Main St., will be by appointment Thursday and Friday for students registered to attend the school next year.
Those interested in registering their child should call the school at (330) 545-1163 for an appointment and registration forms.
Only students registered for kindergarten will be accepted for screening. Applications for students in grades one to eight also are being accepted.
