HONORS Yo-Mah-O names winners of awards



The event took place at Antone's Banquet Centre.
BOARDMAN -- Members of Yo-Mah-O Chapter, International Association of Administrative Professionals, held their annual Administrative Professional/Executive Night April 24 at Antone's Banquet Centre.
Sarah Brown-Clark, Youngstown Municipal Clerk of Courts, was honored as 2002 Executive of the Year.
She was recommended for the honor by her administrative assistant, Joyce Laska, and was presented a plaque by Mary Mislay Hake, chairwoman of the executive night committee.
Also honored was Joan Battagline as 2002 Member of the Year. She is chapter president and a 25-year employee of Home Savings & amp; Loan Co. in Youngstown. Her award was presented by Patricia Vallas, chairwoman of the member of the year committee.
Executive of the year
A cum laude graduate of Ohio University with bachelor's and master's degrees in English, Brown-Clark, also has earned hours toward her doctorate in English at Kent State University. She is on political leave from Youngstown State University, where she has been an assistant professor of English since 1972. She also served as director of Black Studies Program and coordinator of the Black History celebration at the university.
She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Order of the Eastern Star and Third Baptist Church. She served on the Youngstown Board of Education from 1992-99, including two consecutive terms as president. She is president of the Youngstown Chapter of Links Inc., and is chairwoman of the Youngstown Human Relations Commission and the Mahoning County Transportation Coalition.
A member of the Salvation Army board, she also is a member of the executive committee of the Community Corp., better known as the United Way of Youngstown, having served as campaign division leader in 1989, 1990 and 1991. She also was chairwoman of the United Way fund distribution committee for several years.
She served as chairwoman of the Western Reserve Transit Authority and on the boards of the YWCA, Youngstown Area Urban League, Mahoning County Retardation Workshop, Woodside Receiving Hospital, Leadership Mahoning Valley and the Mahoning County Mental Health Board. She also was a member of the Leadership Ohio charter class.
Brown-Clark was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the National Association of Court Managers in July 2001 and serves on the National Center for State Courts/American Judges Association project committee. She is the mother of three children.
Member of the year
Battagline is a native of Pittsburgh and graduate of Duquesne University. She began her career with Home Savings & amp; Loan as a teller and has worked as savings counselor, loan/branch secretary and sales associate supervisor.
She has served the Yo-Mah-O Chapter as president, president-elect, vice president and two terms as secretary, has participated on many committees, and has attended seminars and workshops of the Ohio Division and local area networking meetings.
She has three children and two stepchildren, and lives in Berlin Center with her husband, Pat. She is a member of the choir at St. James Church in North Jackson.
