Appreciation day
AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Baptist Church will show its appreciation and recognize the Austintown fire and police personnel and their families with a free breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 18. On May 19, the church will again recognize and honor them during the 11 a.m. service that will include a memorial for family members and co-workers who have died. The Austintown firemen honor guard will present the colors.
Service for nurses
WARREN -- An interfaith service of Blessings for Nurses will be at 7 p.m. May 5 in First Presbyterian Church of Warren. It will start National Nurses Week.
Ascension Day service
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bethlehem Lutheran Church will be host church for area Lutherans for an Ascension Day worship service at 11 a.m. May 9. A luncheon after the service will be sponsored by Lutheran Brotherhood, Youngstown Branch 8553.
Baccalaureate service
BOARDMAN -- Ohev Tzedek Shaarei Torah Congregation will be the host of a student-led Boardman Community Interfaith Baccalaureate service at 7 p.m. May 12. All graduating seniors, their families, friends, and clergy of their congregations are invited. The service will celebrate in praise and song the students' commitment in faith, and recognize their need for continued guidance. Students from Boardman-area congregations are planning the service. Ensemble groups from the Boardman high school orchestra, band and chorus will also participate. In keeping with Jewish tradition, all males will be provided with a yarmulke to enter the sanctuary.
50th anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christ Church (United Presbyterian) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend.
The church was officially organized April 30, 1952. The congregation had been meeting for worship, study, fellowship and services since its initial service Nov. 4, 1951. There were 177 people who signed the membership charter.
There is a closed banquet and program tonight featuring the Youngstown Connection. At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, there will be an anniversary service featuring organ music, a violin duet, and songs by the Kid's Khoir and Chancel Choir.
The Rev. Dr. Paul R. Coleman, the founding pastor, who served the congregation until his retirement in 1986, will speak. A reception will follow the service.
Community project
HUBBARD -- Churches and schools are taking part in a drive to raise $25,000 and as much in goods for the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. The collection day will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 1 in the municipal building parking lot. The collection began this week. Barrels are in most of the community's churches and businesses. Items needed are towels, washcloths, twin sheets, blankets and pillows. Schools and churches are also collecting items. On June 1, there will be a free carwash, gospel singing, vendors with give-aways, and other organizations selling items to support the Rescue Mission. Call (330) 534-9721 or (330) 534-0084.
Revival set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Northside Baptist Church will have a revival Sunday through Wednesday. The guest speaker will be Tim Binns of Huber Heights, Ohio, the youth strategist in evangelism for the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio.
The schedule is:
*Sunday: Sunday school, 9:30 a.m.; a concert with Melissa Means of Louisville and Pete Swartz from Frazeysburg, Ohio, 10:45 a.m.; a concert with Swartz and Red Oblisk of Alliance, 6:45 p.m.
*Monday: Concert with Bea Cruz of Youngstown and testimony by Aaron Means of Lordstown, 6:45 p.m.
*Tuesday: Music by the Hart Family of Alliance and testimony by Larry Means of Niles, 6:45 p.m.
*Wednesday: Music by John Chaney and the Northside Praise Team from Northside Baptist Church, 6:45 p.m.
