SOFTBALL Struthers ace Singer blanks Salem, 14-0



Hubbard, Springfield and Western Reserve posted league victories.
SALEM -- Loriel Singer tied a school record by registering 17 strikeouts, to pitch the Struthers High softball team to a 14-0 win over Salem Thursday in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Singer tied Tina Palumbo's 17-strikeout performance of 2000 as she pitched a three-hitter with three walks. Singer also had a double, two singles and a run batted in.
Holly Hickenbottom led Struthers' attack with three singles and two RBIs. Heather Hrina contributed a double and two RBIs, Tricia Colburn two singles and one RBI, Allison Ginnetti a triple and single and Jaime Zupko two singles.
Terrin Tamati had two singles for Salem.
Niles 2, Chaney 1: NILES -- Karen Russell collected two singles for the Red Dragons who scored in the fourth and sixth innings.
Crystal Martin held the Cowboys (6-5) to three singles.
Canfield 7, Ursuline 6: CANFIELD -- Canfield (5-8) rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the fifth inning with hits and runs scored by Whitney Zunic, Ginny Naples, Elizabeth Brown, Monika Tomaino and C.J. Calabrese.
Brown's hits included a double while Naples had three singles. Kelly Zwierynski, Stephanie Mistovich and Calabrese all singled twice.
Shaina Drummond singled twice and tripled for Ursuline (5-8). Ali Vitello added two hits while Meghan Marenkovic and Jenna Vrable both doubled and singled. Staci Ziobert doubled.
Hubbard 4, Champion 2: HUBBARD -- Lisa Yount slammed a three-run double to highlight a four-run sixth inning as Hubbard rallied to overcome Champion's 2-0 lead in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
The Eagles (7-2, 6-1 TAC) got three of their four hits in the sixth.
Yount (7-2) also pitched a five-hitter to gain the win, fanning and walking four batters each.
Jamie Rigney drove in Hubbard's other run on a fielder's choice.
Champion (6-6, 3-5) scored in the first and third innings.
Springfield 2, Jackson-Milton 0: NORTH JACKSON -- Niki Warren had a single, a double and an RBI to lead the Tigers (10-7, 6-3 Inter-County League).
Jackson-Milton (7-5, 4-5) was held to three singles by Maggie Marsh (9-5). Kay Bruss had two of them.
Western Reserve 1, Mineral Ridge 0: BERLIN CENTER -- It took 10 innings for Western Reserve (9-1, 8-1 ICL) to prevail.
Mikah Berger (7-1) worked a complete game as she scattered three hits and struck out 11.
In a losing effort Ashley Ault of Mineral Ridge (10-4, 4-3) scattered three hits and struck out five.
Southington 9, Lordstown 0: SOUTHINGTON -- Lindsay Byer fired a one-hitter as she worked a complete game. Heylie Meyers hit a double and two singles, scored once and stole a base for the Wildcats (9-6, 6-1 ESC).
Sarah Dopirak of Lordstown singled with one away in the seventh inning to break up the no-hit bid.
Louisville 7, West Branch 3: BELOIT -- Louisville scored four runs in the first inning and three in the seventh. Ashley Mayle singled twice and Stacy Anderson tripled for the Leopards (10-4, 6-2 Northeastern Buckeye Conference).
West Branch (8-7, 3-5) was led by Deidre Snively, who went 3-for-3.
