WARREN -- A white female was found dead this morning in a wooded area about 50 feet off North Road near the Howland Township line.
Residents in the Candlelight Estates area called 911 about 9:15 a.m. to report what they thought was illegal dumping.
No other information was immediately available.
Cop resigns after pleain vehicular homicide
HOWLAND -- A part-time police officer who pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges in a fatal car crash has resigned.
Timothy Albu, 24, quit Thursday, said Police Chief Steve Lamantia.
The chief said Albu hasn't been on duty since the Nov. 10, 2001, crash, which killed Delbert Lambert, 47, of Niles.
Albu pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of vehicular homicide and reckless assault. He will be sentenced after a background check.
Albu was responding to a nonemergency call when he crossed into the oncoming lane on Ridge Road and struck a car in which Lambert was a passenger, police said.
Harding team in Fla.
WARREN -- Harding High School's robotics team is in Orlando, Fla., this weekend competing with 290 teams from across the United States for the FIRST robotics program title.
The Delphi E.L.I.T.E. has had six weeks to design and build a radio-controlled robot from a box of parts. Sponsored by Delphi Packard Electric Systems, the team has competed in two regional events in preparation for its run at the national title.
It placed in the top eight in the Cleveland competition and in the top four in the Canadian regional in Toronto.
Harding is one of three area high schools to field a robotics team. The others are Girard and Chaney.
Woman tells policeof attack by pit bull
GIRARD -- A New Castle, Pa., woman reported to police Thursday that 23 stitches were needed to close her daughter's wounds after being bitten by a pit bull here.
Vincenta Silva of Raymond Street said she and her 15-year-old daughter, Mirina, were on High Street here last Sunday when the dog attacked.
The woman told police the dog's owner asked her not to report the attack, that the owner would take care of it, but Silva has not been contacted since. She said she also found out from the owner that this is the third attack by the dog.
Police have contacted the Animal Welfare League and city health department. Police indicated the dog may have been involved in a similar attack in Mahoning County.
2 face drug charges
NILES -- Two women were arrested on drug charges Thursday night at Royal Mall Apartments.
The arrests follow a three-month investigation by Niles police and their narcotics unit, Trumbull County Drug Task Force, Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Officers and agents said they made several purchases of crack cocaine from the residence of Lorrie Ripple during the investigation. Crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and records were seized from Ripple's home Thursday night.
Ripple, 50, and Genevieve Gallucci, 34, of Higley Ave., each was charged with possession of crack and drug paraphernalia. Police said additional arrests are expected.
Board adjusts contracts
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Board of Education has adjusted the terms of two contracts approved in March for administrative staffers after discovering an error in the contract lengths.
Terri Cameron, who will be superintendent's secretary starting July 1, will be on a continuing contract, not a three-year contract. She will make $29,500 a year.
Rose Hinks, who will replace Terri Cameron as account clerk, has a one-year contract, not three years as approved by the board.
Spina bifida fund-raiser
VIENNA -- Vienna Presbyterian Church on Warren-Sharon Road will have a Cincinnati chili dinner Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. to benefit the Tri-County Spina Bifida Association.
