SOFTBALL Poland suffers 1st loss in MAC

HOWLAND -- Howland's Amy Cornicelli scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Shauna Mintern walked with the bases loaded, one of four walks in the inning, as the Tigers beat Poland 3-2 in a Metro Athletic Conference softball game Wednesday.
Meredith Schneider had three hits and Mintern had two for Howland (11-5, 5-3).
Aslyn Rodriguez had three hits for Poland (11-3, 6-1). Jessica Lamport, Kristy Gaudiose and Sarah Knill each had two hits.
Boardman 3, Canfield 0: BOARDMAN -- Boardman scored three runs in the third inning and Jennifer Pancake, who had two hits, tossed a two-hit shutout for the Spartans (12-3).
Meagan Cunningham singled and scored, Mary McCabe had an RBI single and scored and Laura Amero scored on an RBI single by Gina Rango in the third.
Elizabeth Brown and Kelly Zwiernyski had hits for Canfield (4-8).
Fitch 6, Mooney 1: AUSTINTOWN -- Freshman Jen Pernell had three hits and Brianna Ozias held Mooney to one run to improve to 2-8.
Carla DeToro added a double for Fitch (5-12, 2-2 Steel Valley Conference).
Mooney freshman Gina Burnetti had two hits.
Mineral Ridge 13, McDonald 0: McDONALD -- Sylvia Dubic had three hits and Sarah Gerberry had two for Mineral Ridge (10-3, 4-2 Inter-County League).
Christi Padovani and Robin Zimmerman each added two for the Rams. McDonald is 2-6.
South Range 2, Springfield 1: NORTH LIMA -- Jesse Clayton and Jenn Toth each scored in the bottom of the sixth inning for South Range (6-3, 12-4 ICL).
Jenn Toth struck out nine to improve to 6-4. Lindsay Johnson singled in Jessica Snyder for the Tigers' (9-7, 5-3) only run.
Jackson-Milton 5, Western Reserve 4: NORTH JACKSON -- The Bluejays rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand Western Reserve its first loss of the season.
Behind 4-3, the Bluejays (7-4, 4-4) started their rally with two outs. Lynsey Kosa and Jayne Fenton hit back-to-back singles and Courtney Reppy doubled both of them home.
Western Reserve (8-1, 7-1) had beaten Jackson-Milton 13-1 last Friday.
Kosa and Reppy each had two hits for the Bluejays, while Tiffany Shugart hit a pair of singles for the Blue Devils.
LaBrae 7, Girard 5: GIRARD -- LaBrae broke a 5-5 tie as it scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Winning pitcher Kendra Needles hit two singles for the Vikings.
Girard (2-13, 2-9 Trumbull Athletic Conference) was paced by Beth Carney with two doubles and two singles, while Jen Miller hit a double and two singles and Angela Dipiero hit three singles.
Southington 10, Bloomfield 9: SOUTHINGTON -- Lindsay Byer hit two triples and scored twice for Southington (8-6, 5-1 East Suburban Conference).
Becca Derr hit a triple and single and drove in two runs. Haylie Myers hit two singles and drove in two runs. Samantha Stolba hit a pair of singles.
