Rotary's check for riverwalk sets record for civic groups

The first phase of the $5 million project is under way.
WARREN -- The Rotary Club of Warren presented the city with a $143,500 check Wednesday for the riverwalk project.
Rotary officials said the organization has been raising money for the project for several years.
Mayor Hank Angelo said it's the largest check given by a civic group in the city's history.
The riverwalk project is planned for two phases.
The first phase of the $5 million riverwalk project along the Mahoning River is under way with $1.4 million being used to install utilities and construct walkways, parking areas and an amphitheater.
The second and more costly phase calls for the restoration of the outside of the Kinsman House, reconstruction of its carriage house barn and upgrading the Land Title House.
The outdoor theater will be used for special events. The theater is expected to have its grand opening sometime in September. Several other organizations also have contributed to the project.
The State Controlling Board kicked in $275,000 for the project in June 2000.
