LISBON Detective: Man admitted killing

Authorities say the defendant confessed the murder to a police officer.

LISBON -- The man charged in the April 7 slaying of a Knox Township woman has admitted the crime, an investigator said in court.
Judge Robert Roberts of Columbiana County Municipal Court determined during a hearing Wednesday that Gregory Doak, 44, of Knox Township, should be held without bond.
The hearing was prompted by county Prosecutor Robert Herron's motion seeking to have Doak held without bail.
Doak would be a danger to the community if released from jail, Herron argued.
The killing
During the hearing, Jerry Herbert, a county sheriff's department detective, stated that Doak confessed gunning down Teresa Stoffer, 42.
Doak admitted the crime to an Alliance police officer, Herbert said without elaborating.
Alliance was among the area departments that converged on a mobile home park along U.S. Route 62 in Knox Township after receiving reports of a man on a shooting rampage.
Authorities say Doak fatally shot Stoffer outside her trailer.
Doak drove to the park armed with a .223-caliber semiautomatic rifle intending to kill Stoffer and his estranged wife, Angela Doak, 39, authorities have said.
Angela Doak and Stoffer were friends and neighbors. Doak believed Stoffer was interfering with his marriage, investigators have said.
After Doak shot Stoffer, he shot his way into his wife's trailer, but she had fled out another door, authorities have said.
Doak shot himself inside her trailer a short time later.
During Wednesday's hearing, Herbert testified that Doak has been convicted previously of domestic violence, criminal trespassing and driving while under the influence.
By going to the trailer park the day of the shooting, Doak also violated terms of a restraining order issued April 5 at his wife's request, Herbert said.
Doak is charged with murder, a first-degree felony bearing a maximum life sentence.
Hearing delayed
He was scheduled to undergo a preliminary hearing Wednesday, but his court-appointed attorneys, Lawrence Stacey II of Columbiana and Chris Amato of Wellsville, asked for more time to prepare.
Judge Roberts reset the proceeding for noon May 8.
Doak, who is recovering from his wounds, is being held at the county jail.
Authorities have not described Doak's wounds except to say he shot himself more than once.
