EAST PALESTINE Self-esteem program set at school

The two-hour session is intended as a self-esteem booster.
EAST PALESTINE -- May 21 will be Glamour and Glitz Day at East Palestine Middle School.
Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls can participate in the two-hour self-improvement seminar.
Pupils will sign up for 30-minute sessions on fashion, hair care and styling, nail care and styling and skin care and makeup.
The two-hour seminar is aimed at boosting the middle school girls' self-esteem, said Liz Sherry, guidance counselor. Community professionals will offer tips.
Role models
Sherry said having adults from the community invest time shows pupils the community values its young people and provides the pupils with adult role models outside the family and school community.
Activities such as Glamour and Glitz Day help pupils develop a positive identity that includes self-esteem and a positive view of their future, she explained.
It's all part of a child-development concept by The Search Institute of Minneapolis known as asset building, she said. Pupils who develop strong assets are more likely to succeed and less likely to be drawn to high-risk behaviors such as violence or drug use, she said.
What are the assets?
Some of the 40 assets identified by The Search Institute are family support, adult role models, positive peer influence, religious community involvement, creative activities, personal power, resistance to negative peer pressure, peaceful conflict resolution, honesty, integrity, responsibility and restraint.
