YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior right-hander Matt Brumit was named Horizon League pitcher of the week.
Brumit went 2-0, allowing one run (0.82 ERA) on four hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts in 11 innings.
He had his first career shutout on a one-hit effort, beating Cleveland State 7-0. Brumit yielded a single to the second batter of the game, then retired the 20 in a row.
Brumit also threw four inning of relief against Detroit to get the win. He gave up one run on three hits and struck out six.
Golf
CHARDON -- Youngstown State placed third out of five women's teams, while the YSU men were fourth out of six teams at the Cleveland State Intercollegiate event Monday and Tuesday at Legend Lakes Golf Course.
The women finished behind Butler and Loyola, and ahead of Malone and Cleveland State with a 691 total. Jennifer Grossi and Nichole Hamstreet tied for eighth with 171's, while Lori Hatcher was 10th at 172, Elizabeth Sabatino 13th at 178 and freshman Gina Abruzzino was 14th at 181.
The men were led by Brian Newell (189) in fifth place, while Jonah Karzmer and Shawn Wire tied for 13th with 193's and Dan Traeger was 18th at 195.

Shawn Devanis medalist
BEREA -- Shawn Devan, a graduate of Salem High, carded a two-day total of 152 strokes to earn medalist honors and help the Baldwin-Wallace men's golf team to a second-place finish at the John Carroll Invitational.
Devan shot 79-73 on the par-72 Fowler's Mill layout to earn medalist honors for the third time in his career.
DeChellis to receiveaward from NFF
CLEVELAND -- Fernando DeChellis, a senior lineman at Chaney High School, has been selected to receive the Inspiration Award by the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
DeChellis will be honored at the chapter's Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet to be held Monday at the Executive Caterers at Landerhaven.
Girard's Mike Millsheaded for Edinboro
GIRARD -- Mike Mills, a senior all-state performer for the Girard High football team, has received an athletic scholarship to attend Edinboro University.
Mills (6-foot-5, 270 pounds) was a two-year starter for the Indians. As a senior, he helped Girard to an 8-3 record and a berth in the Division IV playoffs. He was named first team all-county, all-conference and All-Northeastern Ohio, and second team All-Ohio, and selected to The Vindicator all-area team.
Mills, the son of Clara and Robert Mills, will major in speech communication.
Lowellville's Wharrybreaks bench record
LOWELLVILLE -- Lowellville High junior Bill Wharry recently broke the national record for bench-press weight in his age group, football coach John Protopapa said.
A fullback/defensive end, the 165-pound Wharry bench-pressed 390 pounds, breaking the previous record for the teen-age group by 30 pounds.
Wharry, a second-team All-Inter County League at defensive end last season, will compete at a national event in July in the Valley and then at a world event in August in Lancaster, Pa.
