Vehicular homicide
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Timothy Liszka, 20, of Edgewood Drive, is free on his own recognizance after being charged with vehicular homicide in the Oct. 26 traffic death of Hugh McCliman, 62, of North Good Hope Road, Jamestown. Liszka also was charged with careless driving, a stop-sign violation and additional traffic citations related to the crash at the intersection of Kinsman and North Good Hope roads. Police said Liszka was eastbound on Kinsman and ran through the stop sign at North Good Hope, striking McCliman's vehicle, which was headed north on North Good Hope. McCliman was thrown from his vehicle and died at the scene, police said. Liszka and two passengers were treated at UPMC Horizon for injuries suffered in the crash.
Shenango River cleanup
SHARON, Pa. -- Shenango River Watchers is looking for volunteers for its second river cleanup day of the year Saturday. This effort will focus on the downtown Sharon section of the river. The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Sharon City Centre parking lot under a blue tent. The cleanup will last about four hours and lunch will be served. The group asks that participants register in advance by calling (724) 528-1102.
Cleaning up highways
MERCER, Pa. -- An estimated 100 groups will adopt 244 miles of highway in Mercer County for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Day this Saturday. That's the annual date the state sponsors cleanup along its highways, and the state is looking for volunteers to help. Participants are given certificates of appreciation and a beautification-certification patch that is changed each year to make it a collector's item. Those interested in participating should call (724) 662-5350 to register.
Old-school reunion
GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Students of the former Shenango Grade School in West Salem Township are invited to attend a school reunion at 7 p.m. Friday at Cianci's Restaurant Down Under on Mercer Road. Dress is casual, and spouses and friends are welcome. The school was part of the West Salem Township school system and housed grades one through eight.
Beaver Twp. trustees
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees will meet in special session at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the township meeting room in the South Range Plaza to make adjustments to the budget.
Theft of pocket watch
SALEM -- A man living on the 190 block of Hawley Avenue told police someone entered his unlocked apartment and took a pocket watch valued at $250. The theft occurred sometime between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, the man said.
Trucker hurt on I-80
MERCER, Pa. -- State police said a truck driver from Nescopeck, Pa., was seriously hurt when his tractor-trailer ran off the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Findley Township and rolled over around 1:40 a.m. today. Benjamin E. Potter was flown to UPMC Hospital in Pittsburgh where he was in critical condition this morning. Police said they don't know why Potter's rig left the road.
Educational grants
FARRELL, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Environmental Education Grant Program has approved more than $25,000 in grants to three educational programs in Mercer County. Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, said the Farrell Area School District will get $15,000 to provide teachers with resources to integrate and assess pupil performance in environment and ecology academic standards. The Mercer County Conservation District will get $9,922 to offer a five-day teacher workshop at the county's Munnell Run Farm on such topics as pollution reduction and pest control. The Mercer Area School District and Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, which provides educational services to public schools in Mercer, Lawrence and Butler counties, will get $1,000 each for teacher training and educational materials.
