Embezzling sentence
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sallie J. Carlson, 48, of Perkins-Jones Road, Warren, was sentenced to six months' house arrest Tuesday in U.S. District Court, where she pleaded guilty in January to one count of embezzling postal funds.
Judge Peter C. Economus ruled that Carlson, a former Farmdale postmaster, is allowed to work and see her doctor and lawyer while under house arrest.
Carlson was indicted by a federal grand jury in November for embezzling $11,758 from the Farmdale post office.
Her attorney, Maridee Costanzo, said all but about $1,400 has been paid back, with the balance to be repaid within 90 days.
Beating investigated
CANFIELD -- Police are investigating a report that a 21-year-old Mineral Ridge man was beaten by about 20 young people Friday night at a party in a Sleepy Hollow Drive home.
The man, of Lincoln Avenue, was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He later checked himself out against medical advice, police said.
According to a report filed Monday, the man told police he was punched and kicked around 10 p.m.
Police spoke to a juvenile who said the man made threats that frightened her, prompting the attack.
Assault, rape case
YOUNGSTOWN -- A municipal court judge ordered bonds totaling $1 million on a man accused of beating and raping his girlfriend during a four-hour drive through the East and South sides.
Shajehan Haywood, 30, of West Warren Avenue, was arraigned in municipal court Tuesday on three rape charges and a charge of felonious assault.
Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr. ordered cash or surety bonds of $250,000 on each of the four felony charges. He also ordered that Haywood have no contact with his girlfriend of 12 years.
The girlfriend told police she and Haywood had a fight before they got into her vehicle. She said he beat her repeatedly with his fists and once with a stick during the drive.
She said he stopped twice at his father's house to rape her and once at a drive-through store, where he forced her to perform a sexual act.
Held on murder charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 24-year-old East Side man is being held with bond set at $1 million in last month's murder of a 29-year-old McBride Street man.
Lorice Moore of McGuffey Road was arraigned Tuesday by Judge Robert G. Lisotto of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Moore faces a murder charge in the death of Stephen Shackleford, who was found March 19 outside his home in the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority's Victory Annex complex on the East Side.
Investigators said four men were involved in the shooting death of Shackleford.
Two other men have been indicted. Eddie Bryant, 24, of Cohasset Drive, and Armin D. Moore, 23, of Kendis Circle, each face one count of murder and a firearm specification.
An outstanding warrant remains for Calvin Moore, 30.
Shenango River cleanup
SHARON, Pa. -- Shenango River Watchers are looking for volunteers for their second river cleanup day of the year Saturday. This effort will focus on the downtown Sharon section of the river.
The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Sharon City Centre parking lot under a blue tent. The cleanup will last about four hours and lunch will be served.

Old-school reunion
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Pupils of the former Shenango Grade School in West Salem Township are invited to attend a school reunion at 7 p.m. Friday at Cianci's Restaurant Down Under on Mercer Road.
Dress is casual, and spouses and friends are welcome. The school was part of the West Salem Township school system and housed grades one through eight.
