WARREN -- A 36-year-old Brookfield man, convicted of four counts of gross sexual imposition, has been sentenced in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to a year in prison.
James Binion, no address available, gets credit for the four months he served awaiting sentencing, court officials said.
He is accused of having sexual contact in November 2001 with an 8-year-old girl.
Trumbull drug dog dies
WARREN -- Fang, the drug dog of the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department, died this morning.
Deputy Dan D'Annunzio, Fang's handler, said the German shepherd died about 6 a.m. from stomach problems.
The deputy said he noticed around midnight that Fang's stomach was swollen. He took the dog to an emergency animal center in Girard, where he underwent surgery.
"He never made it out of the surgery," D'Annunzio said.
Fang, who was 7 1/2, worked at the sheriff's department since 1996.
Weathersfield cleanup
MINERAL RIDGE -- Spring cleanup in Weathersfield Township will be April 29 through May 4.
Items for pickup should be put out April 28.
No paint, tires or building materials will be accepted.
Residents also can volunteer to pick up litter Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the township building.
I-80 truck accident
HUBBARD -- A tractor-trailer overturned on interstate 80 early today.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the driver fell asleep around 4 a.m. and lost control.
Pupils honored
CHAMPION -- The board of education honored senior Karen Meyer on Monday for winning the Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award for Trumbull County and seventh-grader Aimee Gabbard for winning the school district's 2002 Outstanding Achievement Award for Conflict Management.
The board accepted the resignation of high school vocal music teacher Barbara Masters and hired for next year Shawnn Wilson as middle school physical education teacher; Susan Heutsche as fifth-grade teacher; and Melanie Mascola, as first-grade teacher.
Candlelight vigil
SHARON, Pa.-- Alternatives for Women: Advocacy, Resources and Education will conduct a candlelight vigil for victims and survivors of sexual violence from 6 to 8 p.m. April 30 at the Forker Lab building on the Penn State Shenango Campus, 147 Shenango Ave.
"The Clothesline Project," consisting of T-shirts designed by victims, has been hanging in the building foyer all month in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Rape and beating
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 30-year-old South Side man is accused of driving his girlfriend around the East and South sides March 3, stopping repeatedly to beat her and rape her.
Shajehan Haywood of West Warren Avenue was arrested Monday on warrants charging him with one count of assault and three counts of rape.
The 33-year-old woman told police the couple argued before she spent four hours in his car.
She said he beat her with his hands and a stick and stopped twice at his father's residence to rape her and once at a drive-through store where he forced her to perform sexual acts.
The woman was treated at a hospital for swollen eyes and bruises over her body.
Employee threatened
STRUTHERS -- Police are searching for a woman who threatened an employee at Family Dollar Store about 4:45 p.m. Saturday.
Reports say an assistant manager saw the woman stuffing merchandise into her coat and purse and followed her outside, where the woman pulled a gun from her purse.
She drove off in a blue Pontiac Grand Am.
