Pupils' cleanup project
YOUNGSTOWN -- About 25 Hayes Middle School pupils will do a community cleanup project on the city's North Side starting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday as part of Earth Awareness Week. Pupils will walk from Hayes along Ford Avenue toward Youngstown State University, picking up the area between Fifth and Belmont avenues. Pupils at The Rayen School, Chaney High, Volney Rogers Junior High and Harding Elementary also will be involved with Earth Awareness Week projects this week.
Pianist moves to finals
AUSTINTOWN -- Joel Batchler, 12, a seventh-grader at Austintown Middle School, has won the seventh-to-ninth-grade division for the Middle Eastern District of the Ohio Music Teachers' Association's Pre-collegiate Buckeye Piano Competition. The district includes 14 counties, and the competition was at the University of Akron. As a result of his win, Batchler will move on to the competition finals June 7-9 in Bowling Green. Batchler won second place in the state finals last year.
