Firearms indictment
CLEVELAND -- Solomon Oliver, 24, of 2117 Hamilton S.W., Warren, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of violating federal firearms laws.
The government says Oliver was found in possession of a firearm after being convicted of receiving stolen property.
New zoning inspector
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township trustees have appointed Elizabeth Opre of Berlin Center as zoning inspector starting May 1 when Curt Dungan resigns.
Clerk Bonnie Spencer said Opre has previous experience as the township's zoning inspector.
Dungan is resigning because he felt he did not have enough time to devote to the job, Spencer said.
Women in science event
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Cynthia J. Marshall-Petroff, a dental surgeon in private practice in Norton, will be speaker at the fourth annual Women in Science and Engineering Career Workshop on Saturday at Youngstown State University.
The event introduces girls in grades six through 12 in Mahoning and Trumbull counties to career opportunities in science and technology. The day will feature panel discussions and hands-on activities on topics such as medicine, forensic science, massage therapy and nursing.

Police stops in Uptown
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County deputies made 48 traffic and pedestrian stops in the city's Uptown area from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Sunday.
Maj. Michael Budd said officers made three weapons arrests, two arrests on outstanding warrants and an arrest on charges of marijuana possession and obstruction of official business.
Officers also issued seven citations for open alcohol containers and nine traffic citations. They seized six vehicles driven by operators with suspended licenses and recovered one stolen vehicle.
Sex-abuse prevention
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Women's Center/Rape Crisis Center of Lawrence County will have a group for kids ages 7 to 10 to focus on sexual-abuse prevention from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. next Monday.
The group sessions on self-protection, self-esteem and safety will continue the next three Mondays at the same time at the center at 1218 W. State St. Call (724) 652-9036.
Car hits woman
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The condition of a woman hit by a car Friday night was not available this morning from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Shenango Township police said Mary Ann Walters, 67, of Ellwood Road was walking across Ellwood Road near Pa. Route 388 to her mailbox at 8:24 p.m. when she was hit.
Police have not decided if charges will be filed.
Church roof fire
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Workers replacing a church roof caught it on fire about 10:45 a.m. Saturday, said fire Chief James Donston.
There was about $7,000 damage to Union Baptist Church on West Grant Street caused by a propane blowtorch used to heat tar, he said. Firefighters contained the blaze to the front part of the church, which was usable for Sunday services, he said.
The workers were from Gordon Flack Home Improvements of New Castle.
Kids' health screening
EAST LIVERPOOL -- An early childhood screening day for children from birth to 5 years old will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 1 at First Free Methodist Church, 16260 St. Clair Ave.
The Columbiana County Children First Council and Help Me Grow are sponsoring the event. Hearing, speech, vision and developmental screenings are free and provide parents with information about their child's health and development.
