NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The condition of a woman hit by a car Friday night was not available this morning from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Shenango Township Police said Mary Ann Walters, 67, of Ellwood Road was walking across Ellwood Road near Pa. Route 388 to her mailbox at 8:24 p.m. Friday when she was hit by a 1995 Pontiac Sunbird. Driver Janice L. Bostrom, 52, of Ellwood City was traveling south, police said. Police said Walters was hit by the right panel of the car, flipped onto the hood and then the windshield. She ended up under the right front tire, police said.
Police have not decided if charges will be filed.
Church roof fire
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Workers replacing a church roof accidentally caught it on fire, said New Castle Fire Chief James Donston.
There was about $7,000 damage to Union Baptist Church on West Grant Street caused by a propane blow torch used to heat tar, he said. Firefighters contained the blaze, which started at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, to the front part of the church and the building was usable for Sunday services, he said.
The workers were from Gordon Flack Home Improvements of New Castle, according to the fire chief.
Sex-abuse prevention
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Women's Center/Rape Crisis Center of Lawrence County will have a group for kids 7-10 to focus on sexual-abuse prevention. The center's board says the group sessions, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 29, will include discussions on self-protection, self-esteem and safety.
The center says one in four girls and one in six boys will experience sexual abuse by the time they are 18.
The group sessions will continue the next three Mondays at the same time at the center's new facility at 1218 W. State St. For more information, call (724) 652-9036.
Kids' health screening
EAST LIVERPOOL -- An early childhood screening day for children from birth to 5 years old will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 1 at First Free Methodist Church, 16260 St. Clair Ave. The Columbiana County Children First Council and Help Me Grow are sponsoring the event.
Hearing, speech, vision and developmental screenings are free and provide parents with information about their child's health and development.

SRU joins job initiative
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University has joined a nationwide initiative to encourage college graduates to learn about federal jobs and pursue opportunities in federal service. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management and The partnership for Public Service, nonprofit groups, will launch at SRU on Monday "A Call to Serve: Leaders in Education Allied for Public Service."
Outreach activities include seminars designed to inform college students about internships and job opportunities with the federal government.
The nonprofit groups organized the campaign because government officials expect 60 percent of the federal work force to retire within five years, providing an array of job openings.
Judge will speak
NORTH LIMA -- Mahoning County Court Judge Loren Popio will be guest speaker at this month's Beaver Township Crime Watch meeting. He will talk about the judicial system with an emphasis on domestic relations.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday and will be in the activity room at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road.
Park pavilion rates
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township officials are keeping park pavilion rental rates the same as last year. Residents can rent a pavilion in either Memorial or Woodworth park for $40 for the day, which is 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., or for a half-day for $25.
Scott Conway, park board chairman, said there are several prime dates available and many improvements have been made to the structures.
