PREP SOFTBALL Chaney avenges loss by routing Canton Timken

Poland beat Akron Ellet, but fell to Massillon Jackson.
CANTON -- The Chaney High softball team made up for a first-game loss by routing host Canton Timken 19-6 in the second game Saturday.
The Cowboys (5-4) scored 10 runs in the first inning of the second game to take command. Tara Mshar had three hits for Chaney, while Angela Armstrong, Justin Klopta and Jill Kocanyar each added two. Klopta earned the victory.
In the first game, a 5-4 Chaney loss, Amanda Yazbek had three hits, while Armstrong and Renee Palowitz each had two in the loss for Chaney, with Palowitz tripling. Mshar took the loss.
Timken's record is now 2-6.
Mooney 15-11, East Palestine 0-4: EAST PALESTINE -- Cardinal Mooney had 28 hits and gave up just three as the Cardinals (10-1) won their seventh and eighth games in a row.
In the first game, a six-inning affair due to the 15-run rule, senior Danielle Kepics gave up one hit in the second inning. After four innings, Kepics was relieved by Stefanie Grimaldi, who pitched the final two frames. Kepics (5-1) struck out seven.
Kepics hit a fourth-inning grand slam and finished with five RBIs. Stephanie Fabian had four RBIs on three singles, scored three runs and stole two bases. Melissa LaRosa had two singles and a double and freshman Gina Brunetti had three singles.
In the 11-4 win, LaRosa and Petrina Morocco combined for a two-hitter. LaRosa gave up a second-inning single and struck out seven while Morocco, a sophomore, allowed the other hit.
Katie Stickel had two singles, a double and scored three runs. Andrea Fryda singled and doubled and Sarah Wright stole two bases and scored three runs.
Ehrenberg had seventh-inning double for East Palestine (4-6).
Poland 8, Akron Ellet 1: POLAND -- Katie Naumoff and Emily Patton each had two hits and two runs and pitcher Jessie Lamport allowed one run as host Poland beat Akron Ellet.
The Bulldogs broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning.
Lamport allowed one unearned run on five hits, with eight strikeouts and two walks. Ellet's record is now 6-2.
Massillon Jackson 2, Poland 1: POLAND -- Massillon Jackson won the pitcher's duel when Lolly Hmiel hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning for the go-ahead runs. Poland had taken a 1-0 lead in the third on a wild pitch.
Jackson pitcher Kelly Weaver improved her record to 8-0 -- same as her team's. She allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked none. Poland pitcher Sarah Knill, who aided the offense with three hits, allowed seven hits, with six strikeouts and no walks.
The Bulldogs (10-2), who also got two hits from Steffi Graf, have only allowed two earned runs in their 12 games.
Struthers 3, East Canton 1: SALEM -- Lauriel Singer had two hits, including a double, and drove in the game-winning run for Struthers (5-6).
Singer finished with four strikeouts and no walks to improve to 5-4. East Canton dropped to 3-5.
United 5, Struthers 1: SALEM -- Tonya Beaumont had five strikeouts no walks for United (10-2). Michelle Foster, Codey Miller and Mandy Foster each had two hits for the Eagles. Ashley Domico had a triple for Struthers (5-7).
Howland 5-6, Fitch 4-2: AUSTINTOWN -- Fitch battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to tie the first game at 4 until Howland scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
For Fitch, Joanna Fergus, senior Nastasja Faison and sophomore Julie Reigrut each had two hits with one of Reigrut's was a triple.
In the 6-2 loss, Fergus, a senior, had two hits for the Falcons.
Jackson-Milton 2, Newton Falls 0: NEWTON FALLS -- Corey Velk pitched a one-hitter and Jackson-Milton scored two runs in the top of the seventh in the non-league game.
Stephanie Rogenski scored JM's first run on a throwing error by Newton Falls catcher Ashley Shaver and the second run came across when Velk singled home Courtney Reppy.
Velk's one-hitter included seven strikeouts as the junior improved to 4-4.
Senior Jessica Wilmoth had a single and double and junior Lynsey Kosa had two singles for Jackson-Milton (5-4).
Kim Drake had the lone hit for Newton Falls (8-4).
Southington 10-2, Mathews 0-7: VIENNA -- Lindsay Byer tossed a one-hit shutout in the first game for Southington (6-5), but Mathews forced a split.
Byer (5-3) struck out 14 and walked two. She added three hits, including a double, while Becca Derr and Melissa Smith each had two hits and two RBIs.
In the second game, Brittany Parks had two hits, including a double, for Mathews (3-4), while Lindsey Mizicko earned the victory. Lindsey Phillips had two hits and two RBIs for Southington.
Kennedy Catholic 8, Campbell 6: CAMPBELL -- Traci DeGarma went 2-for-4, with a double, and Leanne Madden added a double as Kennedy Catholic outlasted Campbell at Roosevelt Park. Molly Shelestak earned the win for the Golden Eagles (6-1).
Sarah Toscano and Anna DiRenzio each had two hits and a double for Campbell (5-3). Shannon Pavlansky took the loss.
