PREP BASEBALL Late rally helps Mooney upend Irish in tourney
Fitch's Shawn Sutton hit a game-winning single to beat Howland.
STRUTHERS -- Cardinal Mooney made the most of its seven hits by scoring a 16-14 win over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in the Parochial Baseball Tournament on Saturday at Cene Park.
The Irish took a 9-1 lead after two innings, but an eight-run third by Mooney knotted the score.
Jeff Hehr and Dan Vashon each had two hits for Mooney.
Akron Hoban 11, Mooney 1: STRUTHERS -- Dan O'Brien held Mooney to two hits as the Knights used an eight-run first inning to beat the Cardinals.
St. Ignatius 3, Ursuline 0: STRUTHERS -- Brian Hoyar pitched a shutout, allowing two hits, as Cleveland St. Ignatius beat Ursuline in the Parochial Tournament. The Wildcats scored all of their runs in the first inning.
Walsh Jesuit 8, Ursuline 4: STRUTHERS -- Erin Satterlee and Brad Borghetti each had two hits for the Irish, who scored in the fifth to tie it 2-2.
Walsh Jesuit had 12 hits and put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth.
Boardman 8, Cleveland St. Ignatius 7: STRUTHERS -- Sean Curry had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs as Boardman (8-0) edged St. Ignatius (9-3) to stay unbeaten.
Tom Zetts (2-0) picked up the win. Mike Krieger got the save and added three hits. Sean Curry and Matt Repec each had two hits. Andy Good had two RBIs for the Spartans.
Fitch 10, Howland 9: AUSTINTOWN -- With two out in the last of the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Mike Domer singled in the tying run and then Shawn Sutton singled to left to bring in the deciding tally.
Fitch (8-4) sent 10 men to the plate and scored six times in the last of the seventh. The Tigers (4-4) had 14 hits including a homer by Sam Mann.
Canfield 5, Dublin Coffman 4: DUBLIN -- Mike Turjanica walked with the bases loaded, scoring Brent Parks with the winning run, as Canfield defeated the defending Division I state champion in eight innings.
Nick Guerrieri, Dan Leonard and Frank Turocy each had two hits for the Cardinals (10-3). Rick Banna got the win in relief.
Poland 9, Chaney 6: POLAND -- After the Cowboys (5-4) took a 6-1 lead in the top of the second inning, the Bulldogs (7-1) scored six times in the fourth.
John Hay went the route for Poland, allowing just four hits and striking out 11. David Koval had two doubles for Poland.
Niles 9, Alliance 4: NILES -- Joe Infante collected two hits and four RBIs, while Joe Skocik went 3-for-3 for the Red Dragons.
Niles (6-3) did all of its scoring in the first two innings, then Jeff Claar (1-0, complete-game, eight strikeouts) did the rest.
South Range 16-12, Crestview 5-10: COLUMBIANA -- The Raiders slugged their way to victory over Crestview, hitting four home runs and five doubles among their 25 hits. Brad Johnson did most of the damage for South Range, hitting two homers, two doubles and six RBIs for the game.
In the first game, Jeff Johnston went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs, George Rohan was 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs and Jason King was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. In the second game, Robert Bates and Jimmy Sanders each had two hits with a double and three RBIs.
Mineral Ridge 5-0, Sebring 2-1: SEBRING -- Mineral Ridge's John Vogel had a no-hitter broken up in the bottom of the seventh inning when Sebring came through for a 1-0 victory as the Trojans salvaged a split.
Vogel lost his no-hitter when Ed Householder doubled, followed by Chad Christian's single. With one out, Adam Jurica's sacrifice fly scored Householder from third base with the winning run to end the game.
Winning pitcher Joe Amabeli had 10 strikeouts and no walks and gave up only two hits -- one to Vogel in the third inning and another to Nathan Zimmerman in the fourth.
In Ridge's 5-2 win, senior Pete Goche had seven strikeouts and didn't issue a walk.
Campbell 13, McDonald 3: CAMPBELL -- The Red Devils sent 14 hitters to the plate and scored nine times in the third inning.
Chris Melnik, Mark Such and A.J. DiRienzo each went 2-for-3 for the Red Devils (8-0).
Newton Falls 12, Jackson-Milton 2: NEWTON FALLS -- Senior pitcher Scott Wilson gave up six hits and had four hits at the plate in a game that ended with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule.
One of Wilson's hits was a triple that accounted for one of his two RBIs.
Senior Jay Spahlinger had two hits for a pair of RBIs, while sophomore Mike Staunton added a two-run single for Newton Falls (6-5).
Southeast 11, Crestwood 3: RAVENNA -- Jacob Moccacw had three hits, including two doubles for the Pirates (8-0, 5-0), who banged out 17 hits.
Crestwood (3-7, 1-5) was held to three hits by Ryan Davis (3-0).
West Branch 10-18, Salem 3-5: SALEM -- In the opener Robert Stull allowed just one earned run and four hits while striking out 10 Quakers (3-10).
The Warriors (8-4) banged out 18 hits in the second game, led by Josh Scott and Don Close, each with three hits.
Southington 10-12, Mathews 8-5: VIENNA -- Patrick Stantial had a triple, double and two singles; Chris Sustak had a three-run homer and Kevin Swiger had two hits including a two-run homer in a 12-5 second-game victory during East Suburban Conference action.
Also for the Wildcats (5-2, 3-1), Tim Grimm doubled and hit a two-run homer, while Josh Petty added two singles. Junior Max Slater gave up five hits over six innings that included five strikeouts.
