Would you give?
The Vindicator asked 100 of its News Contacts what reasons would keep them from donating their organs, or those of a family member:
My only reticence about organ donation would be if it was found out they were being sold to the highest bidder rather than donated to those individuals with the greatest immediate need or those with the best chance of long-term viability. Other than those reservations, it's a selfless act that gives you a chance to be a hero to someone in need, and in doing so, enriching not only their life, but the legacy of the one you lived.

One of the primary reasons that could keep me from donating my organs is not knowing exactly what they will be used for. Will the organ go for a needed transplant, or will it end up on the cutting floor of a medical school?

Nothing would keep me from donating mine or my family's organs. It's the right thing to do.

If I were allowed to choose the recipient, I would probably decline a candidate that didn't meet my criteria for an upstanding human being. However, when the organs are placed in an organ bank, you don't have that choice, properly so. The small chance that somebody unsatisfactory to me might receive the organ would not deter me from donating the organs. It is a terrible waste to destroy organs that are needed by others.

I was asked recently by the DMV and declined. I believe that in the future I would consider it. People's views tend to change as we age.

With all the unfortunate people out there on waiting lists for organs, it seems such a waste to not do so. People that are uncomfortable making this donation of life should reconsider.

The only reason that would keep me from donating organs of my family members is if they didn't want to be part of organ donation. I, myself, will be an organ donor when the time comes.

Organ donation has always been of importance to me. A close family member died a month ago without ever receiving a much-needed liver. Had there been more willing people to donate their organs, he may be alive today.

It would depend on what shape I was in when I no longer needed any of my parts. For family members, pretty much the same thing, or if the family member had expressed a preference. I would consider myself bound by that.
