PREP BASEBALL Campbell outlasts visiting Chaney, 11-10

Mark Such singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for an 11-10 win.

CAMPBELL -- Anything that could happen in a baseball game just about did Thursday at Roosevelt Park. Visiting Chaney High and the Red Devils combined for 21 runs, 22 hits (of which nine were for extra bases) and seven errors, before Campbell Memorial, with a two-run seventh, won the game 11-10.
Campbell catcher Mark Such, with a bases-loaded (and no outs) single to right that brought Anthony Zembillas home in the bottom of the seventh inning, ended the nearly three-hour contest.
"I just wanted to get my bat on the ball to get it deep enough to the outfield," said Such of his only hit in four at-bats. His hit, off Chaney pitcher Ken Bielik, was the third in that final inning rally. A leadoff shot to center by Anthony Rossodivita was the rally table-setter and Aaron Dobich's single to left scored Rossodivita with the tying run.
Rossodivita went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI.
Dobich, who had a double and another single in four at-bats, said, "I knew coming to my last at-bat I had to produce and I knew I had to stay back on the curve."
Big first inning
Campbell batted around in the first inning, and aided by two Cowboy errors and A.J. DiRienzo's two-run triple, took a 5-0 lead.
The Campbell lead was 6-0 through three innings, but in the Chaney fourth, a bases-loaded double by John Shaffo cut the lead in half.
Two more Chaney errors, along with RBI singles by Rossodivita and Zembillas, led to three Campbell runs, restoring the Red Devils' six-run lead.
The Cowboys rallied again in the fifth. An RBI double by Aaron Boris, an opposite field RBI single by Phil Faraglia and a two-run triple by Jeff Shaffo made for a five-run inning, trimming Campbell's lead to 9-8.
That rally chased Campbell starter Jason Metzka, who struck out six, and brought on reliever Juan Torres, the eventual winning pitcher.
Cowboys take lead
Jeff Shaffo retired seven straight batters into the seventh inning, then his two-run homer to deep left gave the Cowboys a 10-9 lead.
Then came Rossidivita's leadoff single to center and Shaffo's exit, and three more hitters before Such came to the plate.
"This was a typical Chaney and Campbell contest," said Campbell coach Wayne Zetts.
"We were fortunate to get timely hitting when it was needed."
"Our guys showed a lot of character coming back offensively, but we need to be better in the field, because that is what cost us today," added Chaney coach Mike Popio.
